The recent torrential rains in several parts of Telangana and Karnataka have not only left thousands of houses inundated but have also destroyed several cars, as they were seen swept away in flood. Within a few days of the havoc, general insurers in both the states were flooded with calls from workshops seeking help in filing motor insurance claims.
In numerous incidents, it has been observed that rain water can significantly damage every single component of a vehicle, especially an engine, electric system, and transmission. The repairing costs may go up to as high as Rs 2 lakh. While car owners who gain the insurance cover may claim it as the cost would be borne by the insurer, whereas others prefer to sell their damaged vehicle instead of shelling out money for the repairing.
Insurance plays an important role
If you have a motor insurance policy that includes both own-damage and third-party cover, then the losses or damages caused due to natural calamities such as floods, cyclones, and hailstorms will be covered by your motor insurer.
There are numerous factors to keep in mind before making a car insurance claim.
People are often under this misconception that starting the car engine will drain the water from within the car and heating up the engine will solve the issue. However, the fact is that when you start the engine of the car, the water enters some internal parts of the engine thus harming the vehicle. Once the water enters the engine, the pistons of the car stop functioning which further leads to hydro-locking. If your car gets hydro-locked due to your mistake, your insurer may not approve your claim request unless you have an ‘Engine protect Add-on’ in your policy. This is why it is always suggested not to start your vehicle if it is submerged due to floods and rather directly get it towed to the workshop.
Before buying a motor insurance policy, you must compare the sea of policies offered by different insurers and also the plans and prices before purchasing a plan online. Make sure your motor insurance cover has all the required add-ons that will make your policy more comprehensive.
