Opposition Left Front today said that the gunning down of a police officer in the state was a pointer to worsening law and order in West Bengal and governance 'failure' by the ruling Trinamool Congress.

"A sub-inspector of police was shot dead at Garden Reach yesterday centring a college union election in the continuing spate of violence and political killings with the state government seeming incapable of tackling law and order," Left Front chairman Biman Bose told a Front meeting at Uluberia, near here.

He said "In the coming panchayat elections, people will give a fitting reply to the total failure of the Trinamool government in properly administering the state which has been witnessing violence with economic progress taking a backseat."

The CPI(M) politburo member alleged that law and order was worsening, farmers were deprived of remunerative prices, there was chaos in the education sector, industrial development had totally stalled and attacks on political rivals were rising steadily.

Bose claimed that 85 Left Front workers were killed, and nearly 18,000 rendered homeless by the TMC since the Left Front was swept out of power 20 months ago.

He said that the state government should call an all-party meeting to discuss worsening law and order in the state.

Meanwhile, senior CPI(M) leader Suryakanta Mishra who is the Leader of the Opposition, alleged that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not find time to condemn the gunning down of the police officer.

Mishra told a party rally at Rezinagar in Malda district that Trinamool Congress were involved in the Garden reach violence.
