RS Rape Debate: Left Walks Out as Kurien Presides
send via whatsapp

Left parties today boycotted Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P J Kurien by staging a walkout to protest his presiding over the proceedings of the House when it was debating the gruesome rape of a five-year-old girl in Delhi.

As soon as Kurien assumed the Chair from E M Sudharsana Natichappan a little before 5 pm when the House was holding an impromptu discussion on the issue, CPI and CPI-M members staged a walk out resenting his being in the Chair.

The members from Left Parties earlier in the day met Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Shukla to register their protest against Kurien presiding over such debates on rape issues in the Upper House.

Sources said they told Shukla that they will disrupt the proceedings of the House if Kurien is allowed to preside such debates.

Left parties had earlier said that they will boycott Kurien in the Upper House till his name is cleared of all charges in the Suryanelli rape case.

The Left has been protesting against Kurien both inside and outside Parliament. There have been widespread protests in Kurien's home state Kerala also.

Kurien has insisted that there was no case against him and allegations against him were false.

When CPI-M Parliamentary party leader Sitaram Yechury started his speech, he paid a left-handed compliment to the Vice-Chairman "for creating circumstances in which I can participate in this important debate."

The obvious dig was at Kurien whose resignation has been sought by the Left parties in the wake of the Suryanelli rape case.

"Thank you, Mr Vice-Chairman. Mr Vice-Chairman, Sir, I thank you for creating the circumstances in which I can participate in this important debate. We would not have liked to participate in such a debate with any needle of suspicion on anybody sitting in the Chair on a similar case. Therefore, I thank you for creating those circumstances," he said in a reference to Kurien, as by this time Sudarshan Nachiappan had replaced him on the Chair.

I really pity the political parties and the politicians who protect the rapists. And strongly beleive these guys should be handled outside the parliament. What about the media, why do they discriminate between rapist Kurien and others?
