The rape and sexual harassment cases in the country seem to be on the rise further even as people still mourn the death of the 23-year-old Delhi braveheart and demand strict laws against the rape accused

An 18-year-old girl was molested allegedly by two youth in east Delhi when she was returning home from market, police said today.

The incident was reported from Mandawli area last night and Neeraj (22) and Deepak (29) were arrested in connection with the incident.

The duo allegedly passed lewd remarks at her and when she objected, they molested her, police claimed.

The girl then raised an alarm and the public caught them, beat up the duo before handing them over to police.


A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped by three youths in this Odisha district after which she attempted suicide by setting herself on fire, police said today.

The parents of the teenager had died and she was staying with her grandmother at Angiapeta village under Rayagada police station.

The three youths, who were later arrested, lifted her to a nearby jungle and raped her on the evening of January 2 when she was returning home from a shop where she worked, they said.

Unable to cope with the humiliation, she kept mum for a day and tried to set herself ablaze the next day when her grandmother was not at home, she informed from the bed of a hospital where she was admitted with 80 per cent burns.

The incident which came to light only yesterday sparking anger among the people, following which the administration shifted the victim to a private hospital at Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

The state government would bear all the medical expenses, said Rayagada DC Sashi Bhushan Padhi.

SDPO (Rayagada) V N Rao said the three accused -- Muna Chhatriya, Malik Patria and Bharat Khosla -- all aged below 20 years, have been arrested.

"The accused are being interrogated. They will be produced in court after medical examination," he said.

Meanwhile, several organisations, including students and political parties, staged protests in Rayagada town condemning the incident.

The Rayagada district unit of Congress staged a road blockade for a few hours at Kapilash chowck and demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation to the victim.

SP's Odisha unit president Rabi Behera demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation for the victim. The Rayagada District Bar Association decided not to defend the accused persons in court.


An armyman was today taken into custody by Neredmet Police here for allegedly trying to abduct and misbehave with a 19-year-old girl student, police said.

Pramod Reddy, working as a sepoy in Bollarum, allegedly misbehaved with the B.Com student and attempted to abduct her in defence colony under Neredmet Police station limits, they said quoting the complaint lodged by her.

Police said the girl raised an alarm and the locals, who rushed to her rescue, caught hold of the armyman and handed him over to police.

Following a complaint, police lodged a case against the armyman on the charge of attempt to kidnap, and took him into custody. Further investigations were on.


A 16-year-old boy was arrested today after being accused of raping a deaf and mute teenaged girl at Babubagan area of the city, the police said.

"A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on the basis of complaint of raping a 14-year-old deaf and mute girl. We are waiting for medical reports of the girl," said Joint Commissioner (Crime) Pallab Kanto Ghosh.


A 19-year-old youth was arrested for the alleged sexual exploitation of a minor girl for over two years on the pretext of marrying her, police said today.

The accused was produced in a local court, which remanded him in 14 days judicial custody.

Acting on the complaint, the accused was arrested late last evening, they said.

The accused had been luring the girl with fake promises of marrying her, police said.

According to police, the accused recently refused to marry the girl and threatened her with dire consequences if she informed anyone about their relationship.

The girl has been sent for medical test, they said.

A woman, belonging to the Gujjar community, was allegedly raped by two persons after she was abducted near a bus stand in Kotli Surat Malhi area here, police said today.

The woman, a resident of Balhotra village in Pathankot district, had come to meet her relatives in Shikar Machian village, they said.

A member of the Gujjar community, she was allegedly abducted by six people riding three motor-cycles after she disembarked from a bus last night, police said.

Later, she was allegedly criminally assaulted by two of them.

A case had been registered in this connection, SSP Batala Tulsi Ram said adding one of the accused had been arrested.

A hunt was on to apprehend the other five, he said.


A 40-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a person in Maniyalamuddanahalli village in the district, police said.

The man fled after the crime and a hunt was on to nab him, they said.

The woman registered a complaint with police, stating that the man, a resident of the same village, raped her in the presence of her daughter.

The victim received injuries in a scuffle with the man, they said said.


Two youths were today booked for allegedly raping two minor girls here, police said.

The victims, who are cousins and students of class 9th, were returning home from school on January 5 when the accused forcefully took them to an isolated corner in fields near banks of Ghaggar river and raped them there, they said.

The accused allegedly left the girls and fled from the scene, police said, adding that they have been identified as Sonu and Harman, residents of Chhota Jhanda village of Mansa in Punjab.

Medical examinations of the two girls have confirmed rape.

Police are on a look out for the two youths, who have been charged of rape and abduction.
