Reddy Told to Avoid Repressive Means to Curb Protests

Several Congress leaders as well as legislators of TRS today urged Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy to not use "repressive methods" against the agitation for a separate state and demanded that the para-military forces deployed on Osmania University campus be withdrawn immediately.

They also decried the "restrictions" placed on media coverage of protests by pro-Telangana activists and wanted the same to be lifted.

Half-a-dozen ministers, MPs and a few MLAs of the Congress and the TRS met the Chief Minister in the Secretariat separately this evening and condemned the "police excesses" on protesters at the OU campus.

"There is indiscriminate firing at the protesters despite there being no physical attacks on non-Telangana people. Why are para-military forces deployed in large number in the University when the agitation is being carried out in a peaceful manner," the Congress MPs later questioned.

Talking to mediapersons after meeting the Chief Minister, Andhra Pradesh Congress MPs' Forum convenor Ponnam Prabhakar decried the "blanket restrictions" on the media in covering the protests.

"In fact, entry of media persons into the university campus has been barred. It has never happened in Congress rule, even during Emergency," he said and questioned the sanctity of the guidelines issued by National Broadcasters Association.

"We told the Chief Minister in clear terms that the police force, including para-military, should be withdrawn immediately from the OU campus. Also, media should be allowed to cover the incidents without any restriction," Prabhakar said.

Ministers K Jana Reddy, J Geeta Reddy, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, Jupalli Krishna Rao, P Sunita Lakshma Reddy, Basavaraj Saraiah, MPs Manda Jagannadham, G Vivekananda, Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy, Gutta Sukhender Reddy, Madhu Yashki, Balram Naik and other senior leaders were part of the Congress delegation.

The TRS delegation was led by its floor leader Etela Rajender. The TRS too made a similar plea to the Chief Minister and Home Minister P Sabita Indra Reddy.
