Parties across the political spectrum today welcomed the nomination of Sachin Tendulkar as a member of Rajya Sabha and BJP said one would expect the cricketer would devote some time to Parliament.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said the nomination of Tendulkar for Rajya Sabha was a "very good step" and Congress always nominated well personalities to the Upper House "which leads to an enviornment of energy and encouragement in the country".
CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said the nomination of Tendulkar as a lawmaker was 'good' and government should nominate people like him and other eminent persons from different walks of life".
BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said "Parliament is a serious business and one would expect Tendulkar to devote some time to Parliament".
Social activist Anna Hazare said "a good sportsperson is going into politics".
BJP president Nitin Gadkari welcomed the nomination of Tendulkar for Rajya Sabha and has congratulated the cricketer.
Senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde said that instead of nominating Sachin Tendulkar to the Rajya Sabha, the Union Government should award him the Bharat Ratna award.
