Narendra Modi's Hat-Trick: Who Said What

As Narendra Modi won the Gujarat assembly elections third time in a row, people from various factions sent in their congratulatory messages, while Congress remained in denial maintaining that they too had won Gujarat.

Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram

"Congress has won in Himachal Pradesh. In Gujarat too, I think Congress is a winner. Congress has gained several seats and BJP has been contained, the last numbers that I saw, (it was) below 117. If the BJP does not cross 117 and Congress has improved its tally, Congress is a clear winner in Gujarat too," Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters here.

On the victory of BJP in the polls, he said, "The important point is that the kind of sweeping victory was being predicted is not there. The fact is BJP has been contained below the number it had last time and Congress has improved its tally, even if marginally, it shows that the exaggerated claims made by the BJP are not correct," he said.

Odisha CM, Naveen Patnaik

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today congratulated BJP and Congress, who emerged victorious in assembly elections held in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh respectively.

"As you know election is a crucial part of our democracy. I congratulate those who won the elections," Patnaik told reporters without naming any leader.

In Gujarat, BJP stalwart and Chief Minister Narendra Modi was well on the road to performing a hat-trick, while Congress ousted the saffron party from power in Himachal Pradesh.

Tamil Nadu CM, J. Jayalalithaa

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa  rang up Modi and expressed "her hearty greetings", a state government press release here said.

She also deputed two of her party MPs Dr V Maithreyan and M Thambidurai as emissaries to attend Modi's Sadbhavana Mission last year.

DMK Chief, M. Karunanidhi

"The poll results of the two states show the Congress is growing and BJP weakening," DMK chief M Karunanidhi told reporters here.

Karunanidhi's remarks came even as Gujarat Chief Minster Narendra Modi secured a third consecutive term while his party BJP ceded defeat in Himachal.

Shiv Sena Executive President, Uddhav Thackery

Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray termed Modi's win as "historic" and said Congress would meet the same fate in Maharashtra.

"As in Gujarat, Congress will bite the dust in Maharashtra elections as well," Uddhav said in his congratulatory message to Modi.

This was "a historic victory", Uddhav said. "This win has shown that it is impossible to beat Modi in Gujarat."

Under Modi's leadership, Gujarat had surged ahead in industry, energy, water and law and order, Uddhav said.

In the neighbouring state, people had defeated Congress, and people of Maharashtra should also defeat the Congress, the Sena executive president added.

Actor, Amitabh Bachchan

"I congratulate him," was Amitabh Bachchan's response when reporters sought his reaction over Modi's win.

That's the spirit PC. Likewise, when the next UPA scam of less than Rs 1 lakh crore surfaces, you can congratulate yourself for being clean.
