Nandita Das’ directorial debut Firaaq, which was all set to release this Friday, has been banned in Gujarat multiplexes. The move comes as a surprise to the director and filmmakers who are perplexed as to why the ban has been imposed.

The Multiplex Owners' Association (MOA) of Gujarat has decided not to screen the film, unless a dispute over revenue sharing with filmmakers. "We will not screen Firaaq as the film distributors are demanding more money from us," said the President of the Association Manubhai Patel.

Nandita however, denied any problems in releasing the film in Gujarat. "I have not heard anything directly from exhibitors in Gujarat about their refusal to screen my film in theatres there. My distributors and producers said that the film is releasing in the state," said Nandita Das.

Based on post-Godhra riots, Firaaq has already won 7 international awards and critical acclaim at film festivals in various countries.

Patel claimed there is no reason other than financial problems for which the Association has decided not to screen the film. "If the problem is resolved by tonight, we will screen the film from tomorrow," he added.

In a reply to a question weather the film would not be shown like the other 2002 Gujarat riots-based flim Parzania, Patel said "no. No one in Gujarat is aware of the content of the film and there is no ban. Parzania was a different issue as everybody knew the content of the film".

Firaaq is set over a 24-hour period, and follows multiple narratives. The film stars veterans like Naseruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal, Raghuveer Yadav, Deepti Naval, Sanjay Suri, Shahana Goswami and Tisca Chopra.
