Former UP minister Amarmani Tripathi's bid to contest Lok Sabha polls suffered a setback on Monday with the Uttarakhand High Court rejecting the bail plea of the SP MLA, serving life sentence in poetess Madhumita Shukla murder case.

A division bench comprising Justices B C Kandpal and Sudhanshu Dhuliya turned down Amarmani's plea here after his counsel sought bail for him to enable him to contest the elections.

CBI counsel Arvind Vashisht opposed Amarmani's bail petition claiming that the MLA had in the past tried to tamper with the evidence during the trial.

Vashist also pointed out that the Supreme Court had rejected Amarmani's bail plea during the trial proceeding.

A CBI court in Dehradun had sentenced Amarmani, his wife Madhumani and two others to life sentences in October 2007 for murdering Madhumita Shukla, a poetess who had an affair with Amarmani and was pregnant.

The MLA was a minister in the BSP government in Uttar Pradesh at the time of the murder.

In his petition, Amarmani urged the court to grant him bail till his petition challenging the CBI court's verdict in the Madhumita murder case is decided by the High Court as he wished to contest the general elections.

Amarmani's name does not figure in the candidates list of his party announced so far for the Lok Sabha polls.
