Remembering the security personnel who laid down their lives while fending off an attack on Parliament House Complex in 2001, Speaker Meira Kumar today asked MPs to renew their efforts to fight the threat of terrorism.

"On this occasion, let us resolve to renew our efforts to combat the threat of terrorism in all forms and reaffirm our pledge to protect the unity, integrity and sovereignty of our motherland," the Speaker said as soon as the House met for the day.

The members then stood in silence as a mark of respect to the departed.

Recalling the "dastardly terrorist attack" on Parliament House - the edifice of the country's democratic polity - Kumar said the attack was foiled by the vigilant security personnel.

Five security personnel of Delhi Police, a woman constable of Central Reserve Police Force and two security assistants of the Parliament Security achieved martyrdom while valiantly thwarting the attack, the Speaker said. A gardener was also killed.

"The House pays homage to the martyrs, who laid down their lives while defending Parliament during the terrorist attack on December 13, 2001 and expresses its solidarity with their families," the Speaker said.

In the Rajya Sabha too, tributes were paid to the martyrs of Parliament terror attack.

In his message, Chairman Hamid Ansari said, "On this occasion, we recall the supreme sacrifices made by our security personnel."

He said the whole House joined him in condemning the terrorist attack in unequivocal terms.

"We once again reiterate our firm resolve to fight terrorism with determination and rededicate ourselves to protect the sovereignty and integrity of our nation."
