Karnataka orders judicial probe into Haveri police firing

Bangalore, June 15 (PTI) The Karnataka government today ordered a judicial inquiry into the June 10 police firing on farmers at Haveri in which one person was killed and four others were injured.

"The one-man judicial inquiry commission headed by retired High Court judge K Jagannatha Shetty will submit its findings on the incident in about four months time," Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa told reporters here.

"We have not ordered the probe succumbing to pressures or under threat from opposition parties. The government is of the firm view that the opposition shall not use this as an alibi to vitiate peace," Yeddyurappa asserted while defending the decision that came on the eve of Congress launching a statewide stir to protest police firing on farmers.

Attacking Congress and JD-S, which have sworn to make it an issue against the first BJP government, Yeddyurappa said "it is unfortunate that those who are to ensure adequate supplies of fertilisers (referring to Congress-led UPA government) have been raking up the matter.

"My government is truly a pro-farmer. I have sworn-in in the name of farmers. I consider it as my bounden duty to render justice to the farming community. I will not allow any injustice to be meted out to them," he said, apparently taking a dig at the opposition.

The opposition parties were trying to put the blame on the BJP government which had not even completed a fortnight in office, he said, pointing to the opposition sponsored protests.
