Introducing Urdu as a second language in English medium schools in Jammu and Kashmir are among the steps taken by the state government to promote the language.

Urdu is being taught as an optional subject from class-I to class-VIII in government schools and from class VI-VIII in private institutions, the government said in reply to a question in the Legislative Council.

It is also being taught as an optional subject from class VI-X and as an elective subject in classes XI-XII in Hindi medium schools, Minister for Tourism and Culture Nawang Rigzin Jora said.

All Administrative Secretaries and Head of Departments have been told to indicate names of government and semi- government departments, public places, roads and parks in Urdu besides English, he said.

All IAS, IPS and KAS officers are required to pass departmental examinations, in which Urdu is one of the subjects, Jora said.
