Former CJ of Gujarat HC Justice B.J. Divan Dead

Former Chief Justice of Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh High Courts Bipinchandra Jivanlal Divan passed away here today.

Divan, who was 93, died due to age-related health problems, sources said.

Gujarat governor Dr Kamla, in her condolence message, said, "With the passing away of Justice Divan, the country has lost a law scholar and an active social worker."

Chief minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the death of Divan and said that he would always be remembered for his love of legal justice system.

The post-lunch session in Gujarat High Court was cancelled today as a mark of respect to the former Chief Justice.

Born on 20 August 1919, Justice Divan was educated at Proprietary High School, Ahmedabad, Wilson College and Government Law College, Bombay and the University School of Economics and Sociology, Bombay (now Mumbai).

He was enrolled as an Advocate of Bombay High Court on the Appellate Side in September, 1941 and on the Original Side in September, 1943 and practiced there from 1943 to 1954.

Justice Divan was appointed as Judge, Bombay City Civil Court and Additional Sessions Judge Greater Bombay on November 4, 1954 and as Principal Judge, Bombay City Civil Court and Sessions Judge Greater Bombay on May 1, 1961.

He was appointed as Additional Judge of Gujarat High Court from April 19, 1962 and made Permanent Judge with effect from September 23, 1963.

Divan was appointed as Chief Justice, Gujarat High Court from 17 July 1973. He was later transferred to Andhra Pradesh High Court in July 1976.

He was also an acting Governor of Andhra Pradesh from February 17, 1977 to May 5, 1977.

Later, he was transferred to Gujarat High Court as Chief Justice, with effect from August 1977, where he retired in August 1981.
