Will Continue Fight for Statehood: Telangana Cong Leaders
Congress leaders from Telangana today vowed to continue their fight with people's support for securing statehood to the region even as they expressed "strong hope" that party president Sonia Gandhi would keep her promise on bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing a public meeting at Indira Gardens here, organised to extend financial assistance to families of those who laid down their lives for the cause of Telangana, the Congress leaders from the region asserted that it was only their party that would ultimately deliver the separate state.

"We are confident that Sonia Gandhi will never go back on her promise and Telangana state will soon become a reality," the Congress leaders maintained.

Congress Central Working Committee member K Keshava Rao, state ministers J Geeta Reddy, D Sridhar Babu, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, Jupalli Krishna Rao, Sunita Lakshma Reddy, MPs Sarve Satyanarayana, Manda Jagannadham, Gutta Sukhender Reddy, S Rajaiah, Suresh Shetkar, G Vivekananda, Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy, former Speaker K R Suresh Reddy, former Home Minister K Jana Reddy, several MLAs and MLCs from the region attended the programme.

Addressing the gathering, minister for information and public relation Geeta Reddy said Congress president Sonia Gandhi would never go back on her promise. "She will give us Telangana state," the Minister asserted.

CWC member Keshava Rao said they would achieve statehood for the region with the support of people."We will follow the constitutional and Gandhian process of non-violence and secure statehood," he said.

Jana Reddy appealed to people not to resort to suicides for the cause of Telangana state. "Achieving statehood for the region will be the true tribute to those who laid down their lives for Telangana," he added.

Former Speaker Suresh Reddy said Telangana state should be achieved only through legal means. "Everyone should join hands and come forward to achieve statehood through legal means," he said.

The Congress leaders distributed Rs one lakh each to the kin of 62 persons who ended their lives for Telangana state since December last. They passed a resolution at the meeting urging people not to commit suicides any more.

Earlier, the Congress leaders paid tributes to "Telangana martyrs" at the Gun Park Memorial in Hyderabad before embarking on their yatra to Karimnagar. En route, they addressed meetings at Shamirpet and Siddipet.

In Karimnagar, they faced protests from some Telangana activists but police immediately dispersed the protesters.
