A spurt in crimes against women is being witnessed in various parts of the
country even as measures are being taken by state governments to curb them.
Etah, Meerut and Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh
A 15-year-old girl has allegedly been raped by a man in Mareara area of the district.
The victim had gone to fields when the accused Vipin forced himself on her on January 8, police said today.
According to the family members, initially police did not register their complaint and it was after they approached the higher authorities that an FIR was lodged.
Medical examination of the girl has been conducted and a hunt to nab the accused was on.
Two separate incidents of molestation in the district sparked off angry protests and led to tension between local communities, police said today.
The first case was reported from Railway Road area of the city when a youth, identified as
Afzal, allegedly dragged a girl inside a house last night and tried to molest her. He allegedly also shot a video clip of the act.
However, the victim's shouts for help brought people nearby to her rescue who nabbed the accused, police said, adding that the accused has been taken into custody.
In another incident yesterday, a youth Wasim allegedly tried to molest a girl in Masuri village in the Inchauli area while she was on her way home.
According to police, in this case too the girl's cries for help brought villagers and her family members to the scene who then thrashed the youth. He had to be admitted in a nursing home after being beaten up.
A case has been registered against him, police said.
A senior Meerut police official said that although there was tension in the area following the incident last evening, situation has been brought under control in the morning today.
In yet another case in Allahabad, a minor girl, who was set on fire by a youth and his parents after he had tried to rape her earlier this month, has succumbed to her injuries at a hospital here after battling for life for about two weeks.
The 15-year-old girl, who hailed from Jigna village under Shankergarh police station area, about 50 kms from the city, breathed her last at the SRN Hospital yesterday where she had been admitted on January 6 with 80 per cent burn injuries, police said.
The girl, who hailed from a family of vegetable-sellers, was set on fire by Gyan Singh and his parents who were afraid that she might lodge a complaint against Singh who had tried to sexually assault her the previous day, the spokesman added.
"With the girl's death we have enough evidence to press for death penalty for Singh and his parents who had been arrested immediately after she was admitted to hospital," Senior Superintendent of Police of Allahabad Mohit Agrawl
Jamshedpur in Jharkhand
A 12-year-old boy has been detained by the police on charges of rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in tribal inhabitated Tonto area in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district.
The boy, a neighbour, strangulated the girl after allegedly raping her last Saturday, Officer-in-Charge of Tonto police station, Albert Toppo said.
The body of the girl was found yesterday from a bush, Toppo said.
The boy was detained and would be produced before the juvenile court, he added.
Dehradun in Uttarakhand
A group of men in a moving jeep passed lewd comments on a woman member of Dehradun Municipal Corporation and misbehaved with her in
Mussoorie, a senior police official said here today.
Six men, travelling in a Bolero, passed lewd comments on the woman councillor yesterday at Buranskhanda in Mussoorie hill station, DIG Ram Singh Meena said.
The woman along with her family had gone to Mussoorie to enjoy the snowfall, he said.
They even tried to pull the woman councillor into the jeep but failed as her family members and tourists intervened, the DIG said.
All the six eve-teasers had been arrested, he said.
Their vehicle had been impounded, Meena said adding they hailed from Roorkee in Uttarakhand's Haridwar district and Saharanpur in Uttar

A local court has remanded to judicial custody for two weeks four persons who were arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl.
The accused were arrested yesterday on charges of sexually assaulting the ninth standard student of a local schoool here on January 16.
Charges of rape and abduction and under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 have been registered against them.
Giving details of the accused, police said Mithun is a degree student, Nizam and Ali Akbar work in a private company in the city and Yusuf is a car driver.
They were arrested after the relatives of the girl registered a complaint yesterday.
Three of the accused had sexually assaulted the girl, while Mithun, the girl's boyfriend, was arrested as he was the first to take the girl out, police said, adding,the three after sexually assaulting her had dropped her at a bus stand.
Kozhikode Judicial First Class Magistrate court (IV) remanded them in judicial custody yesterday.
Baripada in Odisha
In yet another barabaric sexual assault, six men allegedly gangraped a woman after tying up her husband on the premises of the district hospital in Mayurbhanj here.
The 25-year-old tribal woman of Dantiamuha villagehad gone to the hospital yesterday along with her husband to see her ailing brother, admitted to the hospital following an accident, police said today
In the evening, six men started teasing her. As her husband protested, he was overpowered by the accused who tied him to a tree and gangraped the woman in front of her husband, sources said.
After the victim lodged an FIR, the police arrested all the six accused and sent them for medical examination.

Protesting against the incident, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha staged a demonstration at the district collectorate and demanded Rs 50 lakh compensation to the victim and trial of the case in first track court on daily basis.

A 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an ayurvedic chemist at his residence in suburban
Bandra, police said today.
Accused Mohammed Tahir Asnari (48) has been arrested.
The accused called the minor to his home in Darga galli slum on the pretext of some work and sexually abused her after giving her some medicine, police said.
He also threatened her of dire consequences if she informed anybody.
The victim, who stays with her aunt, told her about the incident today following which an FIR was registered, police said, adding further probe is on.
