Tamil superstar Rajinikanth, who had been invited to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi today, will not attend the function, sources close to the actor said.
They said the actor was not in town and, therefore, would not attend the ceremony, which will see Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, among other dignitaries, grace the occasion.
The sources did not divulge any further information.
The actor's move comes in the wake of a fringe student outfit staging a protest near his house last night, asking him to stay away from the ceremony in the light of Rajapaksa's participation.
All political parties in Tamil Nadu, including the ruling AIADMK and also the DMK, have opposed the invitation extended to Rajapaksa.
Earlier, during his election campaign in Chennai, Modi had taken time off and met Rajinikanth at his residence.
He had extended an invitation to Rajinikanth for the swearing-in ceremony today.
Modi will probably spring a surprise by visiting Sri Lanka in a few months time and pitching for the rights of Tamils there. It will neutralize all opposition in India and would enhance his stature.
Subramanium Swamy tweets if JJ doesnt attends swearing in ceremony he will enure imposing presidential rule in TN..Crap one Tam-Brahm wants another Brahm to have full control of state..
See, Tamilians go gaga after Rajinikanth and here he is with absolutely no spine!
His Kochadaiiyan is doing badly and he is afraid that Amma will prevent any further screening and stop any further sums from coming in.
To think that this guy once thundered 'If Amma is elected again, even God cannot save Tamil Nadu' is as meek as a mouse before her.
Rajanikanth, please retire. Do not fool tamilians any more.
Rajinikanth is no ordinary chicken-he is the superchicken!!!
