Does anyone other than the families of those who lost their livesremember the incident And why just an apology to the daughter of the pilot. What about the families of the others who lost their lives. The media and others would be hard put to name the other five people who were killed.
While the apology is welcome and it is understandable that it could not have come between 1965 and 1971, what happened. We had a Simla agreement and nearly 20 years of relative peace and improving relations before Kargil. No apology in all those years.
Hussain is not to blame for what he did. He was under direct orders of a flight controller. His belated remorse is however, a little strange.
Incidentally, Capt Jungoo Engineer was a member of perhaps India's most illustrious aviation family. He and his three brothers all served in the IAF and were decorated for gallantry. His eldest brother, Aspy was the second Chief of Air Staff, the second Minoo AOC-in-C western Air Command (responsible for the air war against Pakistan in 1971) and the youngest Ronnie retired as a Group Capt. Ronnie was my neighbour when I was a child.
