Odisha: Irregularities in MGNREGA Implementation
Inquiry conducted by the administration has shown serious irregularities in implementing MGNREGA at Lamtapur block in Odisha's Koraput district, officials said today.

Projects worth several lakhs of rupees have been started at various panchayats of the block under the MGNREGA without any work order being issued.

"It was found during inquiry that without any work order and funds several works have been executed at the block under the MGNREGA. Work for projects worth Rs 50 lakh is under various stages of completion at the block," said project director of District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Chudamani Seth, who conducted the inquiry on Friday.

"Documents are being verified and probe is on. More details will be known after investigation," he dded.

According to the officer, projects like construction of check-dams, roads, ghat cutting and culverts have been undertaken in the block under the centrally sponsored job-scheme for which work order has never been issued.

"Payments will not be made to the works which has been stated without any work order. Lawful action will be taken against the offenders," he said.

The inquiry was made after at least 15 sarpanchs of Lamataput block complained to commissioner-cum-secretary of panchayti raj department Aparajita Sarangi during the later’s visit to Koraput on Wednesday regarding non-payment of wages under the MGNREGA at the block.

Sarangi had asked DRDA project director to inquire into the matter and to submit report before January 5.

However, BDO of Lamtaput R K Das said, "Whenever any plan is approved by the block, most sarpanchs and contractors start work without waiting for the work order fearing that some other person may get the contract. Our officials are not involved in it."
