Outlook India : MACL Takes Over Male Airport Operations From GMR
Male | Dec 08, 2012
There Indo-Maldivian relations are at the lowest ebb. There could be plethora of factors responsible for the present impasse.
India,on one hand, seems quite justified in taking up the GMR issue with the foreign government on security considerations. China ‘s present strategy of encircling India with the “string of pearls”, could be the motivation to intercede on GMR’s behalf.
Consider the domestic compulsions. GMR is known for its proximity with the Congress . It is alleged to have bagged the contract for Delhi airport after intervention of the Congress’s bigwigs . Such interventions in private matter are not for free but usually involve ‘Quid Pro Quo’ deals. The C&AG has also revealed gross irregularities in GMR’s contracts .
Whatever may be the truth, India’s image has taken a beating in international relations.
