Know Tagore, the Fashion Designer, in Elar Char Adhyay
Clothes worn by his characters described in detail by Rabindranath Tagore decades ago will showcase the bard's sense of fashion in Bappaditya Bandopadhaya's film Elar Char Adhyay (Four Chapters in the Life of Ela).

"He wrote about the material, colour and even the design of clothes which his characters wore in the story. It shows that there was a parallel mind of a designer working inside when he was writing," the director said of the costumes in Tagore's novel Char Adhyay on which the film is based.

"I want to bring out the essence of Tagore with this film and therefore I dared not tamper with anything that didn't match his sensibilities and style," the director said.

Describing Tagore as brilliant in designing clothes, Bandopadhaya said, "In this film Tagore comes up as a designer. His sensibilities will put all modern designers to shame.

"We got the designs from archives and books as it was necessary to reflect the era of Tagore in the film," explained fashion designer Sandeep Sarkar, who worked on the film's costumes.

In the film, model-turned-actor Indraneil Sengupta will be wearing a long black overcoat which is inspired by a high neck, Chinese cut one designed by the bard and worn on his trips to London.

Hate Story actress Paoli Dam, who is playing the lead role in the Bengali film, will be wearing saris in the 'Thakurbari' style followed by the Tagore family.

Wearing full-sleeved blouses with high-necklines and cloth buttons, Paoli will have a retro look in the film with pure khadi in colours like green, brick red, indigo blue and grey.

The actress said she was mesmerised by wearing clothes inspired by Tagore.

"He had a fantastic dressing style. The type of clothes which he had envisioned for the character I am playing are just perfect," she said.

Releasing next month, Elar Char Adhyay captures the ideals of Bengali renaissance of the 1930s and brings forth Tagore's vision to build a nation based on the principles of non-violence.

Paoli plays the central character of Ela, who is torn between her love life and her commitment to the freedom movement that does not permit marriage or family life.
