India Medal-Less on Day 4 of 20th Asian Athletics Meet

India failed to pick up a single medal on the fourth and penultimate day of the 20th Asian Athletics Championships even as China ruled supreme by grabbing four gold here today.

The best performance by the Indians today came in the women's 4x400m relay race with the quartet of S Sini, Merlin Joseph, Srabani Nanda and Asha Roy finishing 4th by clocking 45.03secs at the Shiv Chhatrapati Stadium at Balewadi here.

China won the event in 44.01secs, while Japan and Thailand were second and third in 44.38secs and 44.44secs respectively.

The second best result came from Sushmita Singha Roy in women's heptathlon as she finished fifth with an aggregate of 5328 in the seven-event competition.

She was second till the end of the fourth event and third at the end of the fifth. But she slumped to fifth in the sixth event -- javelin throw -- and could not recover in the last event -- 800m -- which is her weak event.

Wassana Winatho of Thialand won the gold with 5818 points, while Yekaterina Voronina (5599) of Uzbekistan and Chie Kiriyama (5451) of Japan were second and third respectively.

India remained at sixth spot with one gold, three silver and five bronze, while a rampaging China left behind all their rivals with 12 gold, four silver and five bronze with just one day to go in the Championships.

Bahrain continued at the second position with four gold, four silver and one bronze, while Uzbekistan were third with three gold, four silver and one bronze. Saudi Arabia and Japan were on fourth and fifth respectively.

Though it was a dry day for India, Asian powerhouse China continued their dominance with two meet records from their athletes -- Li Ling in women's pole vault by scaling 4.54m and Li Lingwei hurling 60.65m in women's javelin throw.
