Godhra Train Carnage Verdict: Reactions
After nearly nine years since the Godhra train carnage which left 59 people dead, a special court in Ahmedabad today delivered a verdict convicting 31 people and acquitting 63 others including the main accused Maulvi Umarji. This judgement evoked mixed reactions.

Here is a sampling of some prominent responses:

"The judgement has established that this was a pre-planned conspiracy hatched and executed with finesse, so the state government's stand is vindicated... It has set at naught all the wrong propaganda of the so called NGOs that the incident was not a pre-planned conspiracy"

-- Jaynarayan Vyas, Gujarat Govt Spokesperson

"Whatever the judgement with regard to Godhra incident, the communal violence that erupted in Gujarat (post the train carnage) remained a blot on democracy... It is a blot on the record of Narendra Modi... It still does not take away the fact that Modi and his government were single handedly responsible for the riots that took place post the train carnage."

-- Jayanti Natarajan, Congress Spokesperson

"I have a mixed opinion on the judgement. I am satisfied with the Godhra train burning verdict, but I am pained as so many lives were lost due to the incident...We will examine the prospects of an appeal. That's the most logical thing to do. I am not committing myself to any definite conclusion"

-- R K Raghavan, SIT Head

"How can we say the verdict is good or bad without understanding the reasoning... Only time will tell whether the verdict will help increase the level of confidence."

-- Salman Khurshid, Minorities Affairs Minister

"The courts of law will take their own course... There are processes involved because definitely there will be an appeal filed in the High Court. Therefore, it is premature to comment on this."

-- M Veerappa Moily, Law Minister

The verdict has exposed the nefarious designs of the UPA government which tried to cover up the entire episode. Certainly, there has been a degree of assurance that law and justice has prevailed. There were elements who were trying to belittle it. There have been politicians who tried to abuse it. You remember the Banerjee commission report. A retired judge of Supreme Court gave a collusive report that the fire was lit from inside. It was a sham report at the time of 2005 elections. Conspiracy has been established.

-- Ravishankar Prasad, BJP spokesperson

This has exposed the nefarious designs of the UPA government which tried to cover up the entire ghastly episode. It has exposed the so-called secularists including Lalu, UPA government which had set up a fake inquiry under a retired SC judge, which put the blame on victims themselves. This verdict has to be welcomed initially

-- Tarun Vijay, BJP spokesperson

>>The seculars and the liberals wrote the Constitution of India.

The people who wrote the constitution of India should not be confused with ‘liberals’ and ‘seculars’ of today. Today's secualrs are basically a bunch of frauds who have arrogated themselves the above titles.

>>RSS Chief Golwalkar wanted the Constitution scrapped and a new constitution based on the Hindu tradition instituted.

As usual off to a tangent! We are not discussing peoples' wants here.

"Your idea of making Afzal Guru jump the line and be hanged before the 29 others ahead of him is brilliant."

Yes it is, because Afzal's crime is against the state, not against an individual. that deserves jumping the queue.

"The seculars and the liberals wrote the Constitution of India."

yes, and the law abiding truly seculars are following it. Its the "secular" congress and left parties and sundry muslims who dont follow it whenever the verdicts go against their liking!!

Nobody is asking for a new constitution based on the Hindu tradition, not BJP, not RSS. Golwalkar is dead for BJP and RSS. Barring people like Anwaar miyan no body even remembers him!

>>  its the seculars and liberals of India who are ready to undermine the constitution at the drop of a hat.

Irreverent Indian,

>>  I also know that a few months down the line you voice your concerns on the inhuman practice of capital punishment.

Your idea of making Afzal Guru jump the line and be hanged before the 29 others ahead of him is brilliant. Maybe the BJP should make it an election slogan for the next election. I have said several times that I support abolition of the death penalty, but I have also said that that does not apply to Afzal because the Supreme Court has upheld his sentence and the death penalty is legal in India at this time.

"Afzal Guru has been sentenced to death, that decision still stands, and there is no secular or "pseudo-sickular" movement to reverse the judgement. "

As there is absolutely no scope to reverse the judgement, they are doing what is second best: not hang Afzal on some pretext or other.

Had there been any, they would have done it the way they did for Shah Bano case. But they got so much of flak for it they are scared to pull that stunt the second time.

"My reference was to the appeal process, which is not the same thing as going to "any extent".

In the Afzal Guru case, the supreme court too found him guilty, but it didnt placate you. You will continue whining even after (if) the president turns the appeal down. In your mind, Afzal is innocent so no process of trail will satisfy you.
