Yesterday, GNLF rival Gorkha Janamukti Morcha won a no-confidence motion moved by it against the chairman of the Kurseong Municipal Board P C Agarwal after 13 GNLF councillors of the 20-member Board quit the party and joined the GJM on February 29, officials said.
Of the remaining seven councillors, six belonged to the GNLF and the other one an Independent.
Agarwal resigned from the chairmanship immediately after the motion was defeated. GJM councillors then unanimously elected Krishna Limboo Subba and Balaram Chhetri as the new chairman and vice-chairman respectively without any opposition from the GNLF.
On March 10, Subash Ghising was forced to resign from the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council after mass protests led by the GJM.
The press and publicity secretary of the GJM, Benoy Tamang, claimed that the six GNLF councillors had already resigned from GNLF and expressed their desire to join the morcha demanding Gorkhaland.
He also said the GJM intended to take control of two more civic boards, Darjeeling and Kalimpong, and Mirik notified area soon and put an end to GNLF's public representation.
