Former Union Minister T G Venkataraman (82) died here today following a brief illness.
An advocate by profession, he was a DMK representative in the I K Gujral-led government, holding the portfolio of Surface Transport.
He represented Tindivanam constituency in 1996 and was earlier a Rajya Sabha MP also.
Venkataraman breathed his last today, DMK sources said.
Meanwhile DMK President M Karunanidhi condoled the death of Venkataraman, saying he was an ardent activist who worked for the welfare of the Dravidian movement.
"He never failed to accompany me whenever I was on a tour of South Arcot districts. I am deeply saddened to hear of his sudden demise. I extend my deep condolences to the bereaved family members and Villupuram district party cadres", he said in a statement.
