Crossword Releases Shortlist for 2012 Award
The Economist Crossword Book Award in association with Principal Retirement Advisors & Standard Chartered Bank released the nominations for its popular 'The Economist Crossword Book Award 2012' today.

This year, the Economist Crossword Book awards commemorates its 11th year anniversary by releasing 'Crossword E-Book Of Excerpts', sharing excerpts from the books of previous winners in the last decade, a press release issued here today said.

The popular award nominations have been chosen on the basis of book sales in publishing year 2011. Unlike other categories, the popular award does not have a jury but is instead chosen by avid-readers who vote for their favourite author and book, the release said.

The winner will be announced on October 18, 2012 at the awards ceremony.

The nominees under the various categories are as follows:

English Fiction

  • River of Smoke - Amitav Ghosh
  • Narcopolis - Jeet Thayil
  • The Storyteller of Marrakesh - Joydeep Roy Bhattacharya
  • The Folded Earth - Anuradha Roy
  • The Sly Company of People Who Care - Rahul Bhattacharya

English Non-Fiction

  • Taj Mahal Foxtrot - Naresh Fernandes
  • Lost Loves - Arshia Sattar
  • His Majesty's Opponent - Sugata Bose
  • Tinderbox - M.J. Akbar
  • A Free Man - Aman Sethi

Translation

  • In Freedom's Shade - Translated by Ayesha Kidwai
  • The Story of Felanee - Translated by Deepika Phukan
  • Yellow is the Colour of Longing - Translated by J. Devika
  • The Araya Woman - Translated by Catherine Thankamma
  • 17 - Translated by Arunava Sinha
