Angry over extension of Jabalpur-Mumbai Garib Rath upto Allahabad in the recent railway budget, the BJP activists today allegedly tried to set afire a locomotive, detained a train for over an hour and damaged property at the railway station here.
"Around 500 activists of some political party entered the station and set on fire an engine of an empty train at platform number three, detained Patna-Pune Express for over an hour and damaged the property," West Central Railway Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) Piyush Mathur told PTI on phone.
He said the fire in the engine was put off in the nick of time, adding that the damage caused due to the violence was being worked out.
The rail traffic was disrupted for more than an hour in the up and down lines of the section, railway officials said.
The police cane charged to disperse the protesters, government railway police (GRP) source said.
Later, more than one hundred protesters including BJP MP from Jabalpur Rakesh Singh courted arrest against the move to increase the frequency of Garib Rath to Allahabad.
According to the railway budget, the bi-weekly Garib Rath that runs between Jabalpur-Mumbai, will now leave from Allahabad with a halt at Jabalpur.
Both the GRP and Railway Police Force (RPF) have registered cases against unidentified persons in connection with the violence.
