Stern action will be taken against the culprit involved in the acid attack on the 23-year-old woman who died recently, Puducherry Electricity and Education Minister T Thiagarajan today said.
Vinodhini, a B.Tech graduate working in a private firm, had gone home for Diwali celebrations when she faced an acid attack at a bus terminus at Karaikal on November 14 by a construction worker whose overtures she rejected.
She was first rushed to a private hospital in Karaikal from where she was shifted to Jawharlal Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in
Puducherry. She was then referred to a government hospital at Chennai and a private hospital for specialised treatment, where she died yesterday.
The accused Suresh has already been arrested.
"Stern and deterrent action will be taken against the culprit," the minister said after placing a wreath on the body of Vinodhini which was brought from Chennai to Puducherry in an ambulance en route to Tirukkadaiyur (her native village) near
Karaikal, where the funeral will be held tomorrow.
Expressing grief over the woman's death, he said the 'gruesome and beastly' act was so horrific that government would not spare the culprit and deterrent action would be taken to ensure that there would be no recurrence of such atrocities against women in the Union Territory in future.
Welfare Minister P Rajavelu and Local Administration Minister N G Panneerselvam also placed wreaths on the body.
A pall of gloom has descended on Tirukkadaiyur and the village is filled with posters paying homage to the victim.
Meanwhile, CPI's local unit has asked the territorial government to invoke the provisions of Justice Verma Committee report to punish the culprit involved in the acid attack.
SFI, DYFI, CPI-M and women's outfits mourned the death of the 23-year-old.
