If there's one person who is unruffled by the CBI's proposed chargesheets, it is the Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi. He resigned from his old employers, Snamprogetti, a couple of years ago and is now an independent operator in the oil and mines business in Malaysia. After nearly four decades of a hectic social life in India, the Quattrocchis follow a rather tame routine at their sprawling Jalan Laggak Golf Road residence in Kuala Lumpur. Says his wife Maria: "He comes home by about 7.30 from office, we have dinner by 9 pm and go to bed rather early at about10.30."

The smooth-talking Italian, who is said to have charmed Delhi's social circles, is equally polite. "I know you have to do your job. It is your business to call me but you must understand my position." In a three-minute telephonic conversation, he vociferously denied any links with the Bofors case: "I have nothing to say. I have been implicated. They connect me with the case. But I am unconnected with the case. I am fed up with the situation. Kindly understand this. This is something which started 10 years ago to malignRajiv Gandhi and use my friendship with the family. This is continuing. I do not allow you to do anything to connect me with this case. Let them do whatever they want. Let them prove whatever. Please leave me alone."
