"The crisis in business is spiritual," says Prof. Sitangshu KumarChakraborty, whose brainchild the centre is. "All management ideas till now have beenexternal-directed paradigms, developing behaviour and skills, not character and values. But meaning and richness must flow from mind to work, not the other way. We need afundamental shift from the current reductionist, fragmentist, materialistic paradigm toone which recognises relationships, consciousness and spirit as the right approach."

Chakraborty’s quest for an Indian management credo was for many years a lonelyone. Then in 1991, IIM Calcutta agreed to give him space, but no funding. Within months, organisations from across the country had donated a total of Rs 3 crore, andChakraborty’s dream was on its way to reality. Since the centre opened last year, demand for attending courses from industry has been tremendous. For, every Indian managerhas always carried within himself a vague disquiet about the relevance of business toolsheld hostage by western concepts.
