Back and Forth

Hampshire Veronica Bliss: I wish tennis commentators on television would obey the spectators’ rule: no talking once the point begins. More and more, they continue talking while the player is serving. This would not happen at Wimbledon, where there is silence from when the player begins to serve. We want to see tennis, not hear endless chatter. The real joy would be a channel where the only sounds were of the ball being hit and umpire calling the score.

Fight Club

Herfordshire Tony Hall: I met Muhammad Ali when I was the doctor with the England cricket team at the World Cup in India and Pakistan in 1987. In the hotel where we were both staying, I asked him for his autograph. He wrote: “To Tony from Muhammad Ali, Service to others is the rent we pay for our room in the hereafter.” I expect he has a penthouse suite. His words have inspired me ever since.

Closed Argument

Bath Diana Francis: Why is there so little discussion of values in the EU debate? Why is it so widely assumed that “the national interest” is the only focus? This is morally inadequate. The things that threaten our security (climate change, food shortages, storms and floods, war, want and forced migration, etc) call for global solidarity, not fragmentation. Common security is the only kind that makes sense. The UK should work within the EU to make it an instrument of cooperation.
