This week we remembered INS Vikrant
The light fleet aircraft carrier has had an afterlife—as Bajaj motorcycles. INS Vikrant was sent to the scrapyard two years ago. Bajaj Auto had the brainwave of re-using the iron and steel on a range of 150cc motorcycles, branded “V”. The motorcycles—which will go on sale soon —will bear a stamp affirming that they have been “made with the invincible steel of INS Vikrant”. The aircraft carrier became a household name during the 1971 war with Pakistan. It was decommissioned in 1997 after 36 years of thrilling, action packed service. Then it served as a maritime museum till 2012. Legal battles and lack of funds foiled plans to turn it into a permanent museum.
