“You don’t understand my world,” rants the self-absorbed director of a romantic film, one of the many harebrained characters in Punit Malhotra’s debut venture, I Hate Luv Storys. This Dharma Productions film ostensibly seems to be laughing at itself—at the KJo and Yashraj brand of love stories. It cracks a joke about how difficult it would be for a child to live with parents named after Raj and Simran of DDLJ. It makes us laugh at the mirror image of the Amitabh-Jaya poster from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Every filmi cliche we would have scorned at is here—from those innumerable stuffed toys to the loud and garish Gujarati-Punjabi families. But ultimately IHLS reinforces and celebrates the age-old romantic formula squarely and obviously. It’s the same old tale, about protagonists who can’t figure out whether they have fallen in love or in friendship, about men who don’t want to commit to the women who love them and when they do want to have them in their lives, it’s gotten a bit too late.

It’s precisely what happens to Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor, who are working as assistant director and production designer respectively on the sets of a romantic film. Ok, IHLS may lack novelty in terms of the plot but it could still have reached out with some bright and empathetic characters. It might be predictable to the core but could have touched a chord or sparkled with smartness. It does not. It’s neither bright nor smart, does not reach out nor touch a chord. In fact, you don’t connect with the lovers, can’t identify with their strange motions of falling in, out and back in love. The rest of the cast is plain irritating and over-the-top. Also, the film is full of endless chatter but the dialogue is inane and boring. So things get too stretched out and long-drawn. You want the film to wrap up fast but it refuses to follow your instructions.

The willowy Sonam dresses well. But she made a much better impact as the girl next door in Delhi 6. The only good that seems to have come out of the film is that Imran is looking more confident than he has his previous films. But what was the point in lifting his mamu’s emotional scene from Dil Chahta Hai and making him do it all over again with zero impact?
