The energy bounces off the bright yellow walls. There’s a positive buzz in the air, the crowd laughs a lot, queues up uncomplainingly and makes animated conversation. The jury may be still out on the physiological reality of the sugar rush, but there’s no contesting the happy anticipatory effects of deep-fried carbs at Krispy Kreme, the latest American fast food chain to start their India adventure in Bangalore.

Doughnuts are simple stuff, so Krispy Kreme sells the extras and the experience through excellent service. The Original Glazed (Rs 50 for one, Rs 450 for a dozen) is a classic ring best had warm: light, fluffy, melt-in-the-mouth yeast dough encased in vanilla-flavoured sugar icing. The straight-up chocolate add-ons work well. The icing (Chocolate Iced Glazed, Almond All Over, Chocolate Iced with Sprinkles, Rs 60 each or Rs 540 for an assorted dozen) is thin enough to give in with a satisfying crunch; underneath, the original goodness awaits. The Chocolate Dream Cake (Rs 60) takes it a notch higher, filled with chocolate sauce and sprinkled with dark and white chocolate. The chocaholic’s no-brainer choice.

The other filled shells (custard, cinnamon-apple, powdered strawberry, powdered blueberry, cheesecake, Rs 60 each), however, belong to sugar-overload territory. The cakes (Glazed Chocolate, Glazed Vanilla, Red Velvet, Rs 60 each) are the most disappointing: heavy, stodgy and completely unimpressive. The Silky Chocolate Shake (Rs 150) tastes like cold Bournvita but the espressos (Rs 60) hit the spot. Final verdict? Cut back on carbs elsewhere to do an occasional KK doughnut but, watch out, the stuff can be addictive.
