Your rivals say your claim of 2,00,000 pre-orders for Three Mistakes is vastly exaggerated?

How did you manage to sell such a record number of copies?
It’s purely word of mouth that has grown exponentially since my first book, Five Point Someone.

Critics trash your books: is there a caste system in the literary world?
Not a caste system, but I think the critics just don’t get it.

If you had to pick between the Nobel Prize and the most popular writer?
Popularity, any day. I want to be the people’s writer.

Are you the Jeffrey Archer of India?
No, I am the Chetan Bhagat of India. I don’t need his label to sell.

Can you sell a book like a shoe?
No, because you have to wear shoes but you don’t have to read a book.

Any book which inspires you to write?
J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye.

This book is about people in smaller cities or towns?
I like writing about the other India. They all have a story that hasn’t been told properly.

You have a knack of picking themes that have popular resonance. How do you do it?
Any artist has to know the pulse of the nation. This one was a bit risky, but it’s right on target.

Have you decided what your next book is about?
I’m going to take a year’s break to lose some weight. My readers are writing in to say that as a youth icon I can’t be fat!
