To Bikramjit Singh,

My comment on Present day punjab was rhetorical & no way my understanding of history. My intention was to say that the Punjab that you are looking for is in pakistan. Thast where big chunk of sikhs lived pre-parttion days. I am not sikh or the north indian like others to live with sikhs. But i have tremendour respect for sikhs & their gurus. I also accept that killing of sikhs after indira's assination is wrong & those responsible be brought to book, that may include the famous family if proved. I also believe GOI should declare the 1984 masacre as geonicide & apoligise for the mistake. But think, what is the % of sikhs in india, 2%? Do you think you can break the coutry with this numbers? Imagine what will happen to sikhs living outside punjab? I am pretty sure there will be NO backlash against sikhs as the time has changed now. people have realised the consiquences of backlash happened during 1984. there is no way that present day india will repeat that.

Regarding your comment bout multicultural socities crumbling, if thats the case you will be the first victim of it!! remember that you live in multi-cultural society & spreading narrow parochial views. its true that europe is moving right, thats bcoz of some people whose thinking is outated. Going right in Europe is expected & i welcome it as there is need to tone down the ultra liberals in western society. The immigrants should adjust to adapted land & its not the other way!!

i have solution for your khalistan problem, declare whole india as khalistan ( yes, iam serious). Raj karega Khalsa!!!

>> The reason for bringing RSS is in my posting

So you use your own comments to justify your new posts pouring hate on RSS, when the protest against the cartoons is led by Dalit parties, the violence against Palishkar was also led by a Dalit party, and the changes to the books are being made by a secular party? Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!

It's almost as brilliant as the resident jehadi providing fake links to blame Hindus for Nalanda's destruction.

And the last time the books were withdrawn, they were done by the super secular HRD minister Arjun Singh, in the ministry led by the super integrity MMS Singh, working under Saint Sonia, following the demands of the "eminent historians" under the "detoxification" program.

As for Sharma, you should also read Shourie's book on eminent historians, their own testimony in the Ayhodhya case, and also Sikand's recent article about the hypocrisy of the "seculars", of which Sharma was one, as was Sikand till his recent epiphany.

Well written in a way that can only come from the heart. I can easily believe all of it. Racism is particularly common among North Indians as others have pointed out here. As an American of Indian origin, I can tell you that in many cases even living abroad does not cure some individuals of their ingrained racism. The habit of fawning over white men (and women) has become so pervasive that many whites expect that behavior among Indians. "What you're not going to fawn over me?" is the surprised look I get from whites who're clearly shocked. The fawning extends to whitewashing the Indian experience with colonialism when talking to whites. One VP of a major Indian engineering company declared at an SAE conference a few years ago that the British started the industrialization of India conveniently forgetting that they tried to (and largely succeeded in) kill Indian industry to keep India as a market for their goods.

There are exceptions of course. I'd visited Jabalpur in central India many moons ago and found that there were a large number of black students, both male and female who seemed to be quite at home. And certainly, the experience will be much different in Southern India but on the whole, many Indians have a long way to go before they are able to deal on equal terms with both blacks and whites. It will need both education and experience in dealing with all races. The sad thing is that, in India, there are not many who will publicly introspect about their own failings. It would be considered a weakness and shameful. So the prejudices just take longer to die out.

For this author, I would hope that his partner clearly demonstrates to the Indians they meet that he expects equally respectful treatment to Mr. Kuku. That should surely make a difference to how he's treated from that point on.

 @ Saroja

R S Sharma says the following in his book "Ancient India"

"Although Krishna plays an important role in the Mahabharata, inscriptions and sculptural pieces found in Mathura dating back to 200 BC and 300 AD do not attest to his presence. Because of this, ideas of an epic age based on the Ramayana and Mahabharata have to be discarded..."

So, enlighten us, O wise one who has read Jung and Neumann in depth. Which part of Sharma's statement does potrays the "great psychological / psychic truths" that you espouse?

The tragedy is that every person who has done anything radical attacking the fabric of Indian Society is a hero to someone or the other. From Kasab to Bhinderwala to Indira Gandhi everyone has tremendous fan following especially amongst the junta sitting inside glass offices and suburban homes in western lands. Deluding oneself and designing a framework for balkanization of India seems like a good pastime for a lazy sunday afternoon.

Why not take a one way ticket to India and try your grandiose plans?

But Indians have multiple identities and division cant stop at any level, after you divide yourself on the basis of religion you will also have to divide yourself on the basis of language and then again on the basis of your caste and then your subcaste and keep on dividing the land in the process. There will always be powerful groups in any subgroup against whose 'atrocities' the 'victims' will have to keep on fighting.

"A myth represents great psychological/psychic truth."

Well, according to the dictionary, myth means "fictitious story, often ancient". The dictionary also says the opposite of "myth" is "fact" or "non-fiction" or "truth".

None of your dewy eyed romantic "psychic truth".

Shiv Viswanathan considers Shankar's cartoon to be gentle and a tribute. And the Danish cartoons to be insulting. That is his view and he is entitled to it.

But the bottomline - SV seems to imply that freedom of expression is shackled by others sensitivities.

So I guess what happened to M F Hussien was correct. SV should agree. And so should Honourable Anwaar.

All of them were moving slow. Ambedkar alone could not be singled out and held responsible for the delay. The delay was necessitated by the seriousness of the issues involved.

If you read the text book you will see that it actually celebrates the delay because of complexities involved comparing Indian constitution making with constitution making of European Union and Iraq again making use of cartoons;

First of all, i would like to say that this behaviour is absolutely true toward the north side of the country, i want to thank you for bringing this into the open!

From my own experience i can say that racism is prevalent throughout india, but more so in Delhi. I am of fair complexion, but i did face racism, maybe not in the same way as the OP (Racism based on skin color) but in a different way. You would be amazed with this story. When i lived in Gurgaon and went out shopping, i would notice that i did not get as much attention from the sales folks in malls and the like, it took me a while to understand the stupid delhi mentality. Guess what? I had my helmet in hand when i shopped, and this was the reason i did not recieve any attention!!! Just to experiment, the next time, i left my helmet on the bike handle. Lo and Behold! I was the center of attention in the store!

This is also considered racism, racism is not just based on color, but there are several such incidents that are racism is some form or the other. There are several such incidents that i could narrate based on my experience in the North and i have started to hate all north indians due to this cheap behavior they had exhibited.

That's right - Durant, Gautier, Elst are all liars. So are Shourie, Jha, Oak. The only truthful ones are Sharma, Thapar etc. The ones who totally overlook or whitewash the brutal nature of Islamic invasions.

BTW, Ramayana and Mahabharata were termed as myths by Sharma. The only thing that happened - his book was withdrawn, not banned, but withdrawn. No threats to life, no fatwas, no hands cut-off.

Can you imagine anyone writing that the whole thing about some angel sitting on the prophet's shoulder and whispering God's word into his ear is also a myth? Not even our "Alice in wonderland" would dare to do that.

I think the RSS can learn a thing or two from the bigots batting for the other side. You scare the intellectuals, you control history. Mere withdrawal would not do. Total whitewash is the need of the hour.

Shiv Visvanathan says in the Economic Times: "Contrast this gentle piece of work by Shankar with the Danish cartoons in Jyllands-Posten. These were twelve editorial cartoons, which reviled a prophet and insulted a faith. Kurt Westergaard's cartoons were insulting while Shankar Pillai's cartoons were an act of faith in the constitutional process, a tribute to its main architects. It is a piece of history, an accompaniment to the Constitution."

"The cartoons in the textbooks are not just for laughs but are followed by questions, facts, alternative interpretations and comparative questions from other democracies."

Given the way our exam system is structured and the way papers get corrected, it is highly inadvisable to ask students to provide alternative interpretations. For example, it is enough if school students know when Quit India movement happened. Whether Gandhi made the right call in that is a question not fit for school students.

The issue has essentially been sidetracked.

"You want dalit politics to be the gutter that RSS is?"

No we don't. We don't want dalit politics to be the gutter that led to the banning of satanic verses. We dont want dalit politics to be the gutter that led to the banning of Danish cartoons. We dont want dalit politics to be the gutter that led to the banning of the Da Vinci Code.

What is the need to bring in the RSS into the discourse when the dalits are getting all rowdy? I guess you cannot justify the idiosyncracies and indiscretions of your people without bringing in the RSS.

I see no harm if someone uses his marketing skill not only to earn a fat check but also doing some social work. The only problem is that Aamir Khan is a genius when it comes to making money. Shahrukh Khan has also tried the same when he started cleaning Bombay but didn't succeed like Aamir Khan. Even Rakhi Sawant some years back was caught with computers for prisoners doing social work. At least one can appreciate the man's genuine ability to do it better than others

Aamir Khan is not a social crusader like a George Clooney

That takes the cake.  Clooney has one pig and one Darfur. It is amazing that Clooney is a better social crusader than Aamir.

>> "The Islamic conquest of India is probably the bloodiest story in history."

Will Durant is a liar and, like Elst and Gautier, lies about Muslim rule in India in order to mitigate the atrocious European treatment of Jews and Gypsies for 1000 years and the barbarous European tratment of native Americans. These three apologists of European barbarity give a damn about exacerbating Hindu-Muslim tensions in today's India, but have become darlings of Sanghi propagandists!

Why Dr Rajendra Prasad, the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Ballabhbhai Patel, Raja Gopalachary, Dr. Radhakrishnan, Teg Bahadur Sapru, K. M. Panikkar etc. along with Dr Ambedkar  were not shown instead riding the slow moving snail? All of them were moving slow. Ambedkar alone could not be singled out and held responsible for the delay. The delay was necessitated by the seriousness of the issues involved. It could not move faster without compromising the quality and merit of the work they were entrusted to accomplish.

The cartoonist has overlooked the role of others to spare them the  indignity of sharing blame for delay in finalising country's constitution.
