Fedup Bibi,

>> "So Nehru fantasized that Dulles, Bulganin and others offered India a seat at the Security Council, and that he turned it down?"

He was thinking aloud to his secretary immediately after his meeting with Bulganin. He was also wise enough to dismiss the cocktil party chatter from Washington. Only a fool would have taken such buttering-up seriously.

Such ill-bred insolence is all that you are capable of. Do continue!

Explaining the distinction to hate-filled morons would be a waste of time.

This may not be far from the truth. Mr. Mehta may sound caustic, but there is hardly anything in the article that I can disagree with.

America is for life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Social responsibility is not part of it. The poor are much worse in USA than in India. 0.1% of the people own about half the wealth and the rest struggle for a living.

Vinod Mehta's opinion essay asks a great question about Indians being besotted with America! I too as an "NRI" have puzzled over this question. Quite frankly, America affords them a lifestyle (a car, a bigger house in a gated community, clean streets, and cleaner air) and the dream of making it big in a marginally more salubrious Bangalore or Gurgaon. It has been my observation, that many NRIs in America have a shallow understanding of American society, its culture and music and I have encountered many NRIs who either look down upon India or are torn between making a home in India or United States can't make up their mind as to where they truly belong. The latter are often seen flitting about, back in forth to India in jet planes. They can't stand the idea they have no servants in the US and when in India, they have the servants but find India too chaotic, the water undrinkable, and worse no electricity! So, for these poor souls, its neither here nor there! Lastly, most Americans don't know much about India, in fact, they don't know much about their own country. What little they do know or encounter about India (gods, turbans, snakes, Kamasutra, mysticism, food, etc.) leaves them befuddled and confused. America loves only America, and no one else. It views itself as an exceptional society, with a God given constitution with unlimited possibilities where "anyone" can make it (tell that to African Americans!)with hard work and ambition. These are powerful myths upon which America's soft power is based that draws millions to its shores. When it comes to soft power, America is truly a superpower. NRIs can be an asset to India, but as Vinod Mehta stresses, India's policy towards the USA should not be based on their narrow business and other pecuniary interests.

>> Having lived through Emergency days in Delhi,.........

That must have a fun time for sickos, with communal leaders thrown into prison, and henchmen like Navin Chawla (who was later promoted to CEC by Congress) ruling the roost.

I'm sure you pine for those days. A Gandhi is in the chair, communal leaders in jail, and Garib(i) being "hataoed".
