Mani Shanker Aiyer had a long article in the Express yesterday moaning about how the government is not supporting the Palestinians. The comments on this article are worth reading - almost all of them point out that the Arabs have never supported India, and tell Aiyer to go jump in a lake. It looks like Indians have finally had enough of this Gandhi-Nehru socialist bull-crap that we have been fed for 60 years.

Even if for argument's sake we accept the Shiv Sena's explanation that there was no religous angle, the MPs have still broken the law. As DLN has said, charge the MP under section 352 and send the MP to jail. Let the ethics committee of parliament decide whether he (and Tapas Pal) are fit to sit in parliament.

"You would not rest until the the very worst possible meaning from a verse is derived!" Anwaar

There is nothing ambiguous about Koran 9:29 and I merely pointed out that the Pakistani ambassador you quoted is being disingenuous when he claims that conversion or death is not the only alternative given to non-Muslims but that there are other (unspecified) ways of living peacefully with Muslims. That unspecified way is dhimmitude, an obscene institution like untouchability that has no place in the 21st century.

It appears that the Pakistani ambassador supports dhimmitude - in fact, Hindus are officially classifed as dhimmis ("zimmis') in Pakistan today. This obscenity need to be exposed and fought by non-Muslims. If Muslims like you don't like that, it says something about you and your community.

The Supreme Court bench which rejected Mr. Subrata Roy’s latest plea on Tuesday, 22nd July, 2014 to release him so that his group may be able to raise funds required for compliance of Court’s verdict given on 26th March, 2014 is a newly constituted three judge bench. The Sahara group has not till now come forward with any concrete plan to raise required funds. Perhaps, the legal experts of the Sahara group were thinking that the new bench would give relief to Mr. Subrata Roy.
The only solution, it would now be clear to Mr. Roy and his team of eminent lawyers, is to deposit the required amount with the Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI). It will be worth watching how and whether the Sahara group raises necessary funds to pay to SEBI, in coming weeks. Those who are observing the Sahara case from a distance, however, think that Mr. Roy and his Sahara group would continue to make repeated pleas, without actually depositing the required amount with SEBI, for well known reasons.

Where were all these legal luminaries and others on this forum who defended Katju's right to interfere in the political arena by writing an article in The Hindu calling on Indians not to vote for NaMo.?

I said at the time that it was improper for a person holding a quasi-judicial appointment paid from the Consolidated Fund to make such statements which he was welcome to make a s a privatye system. “Shourie camped in Delhi for several days and even gave a few interviews even though he had shifted to the township of Lavasa, near Pune in Maha¬rashtra, several years ago.”

Saba is such a mean B****. Probably still smarting with the whacking she got from Shourie from the “Rational Vs. National” horseshit that she dished out years ago, not realizing that she can accuse Shourie of anything but should never question him on his integrity.

When she says he ‘parked himself in delhi’ she does not realize that Shourie’s wife is going through a serious health problem and he is in Delhi to be closer to better medical facilities. His only son is a paraplegic, who needs constant medical attention too. If Saba, the b**** couldn’t be more sensitive, at least she could be a little more honest and done a better research before casting aspersions on a man of such impeccable integrity. This is the 2nd time that because of her Outlook has to eat crow!!

She should be ashamed!!

Declaration from Outlook:
"In Saba Naqvi’s article Not as R-positive, the concluding paragraphs contai¬ned a reference to former Union disinvestment minister Arun Shourie camping himself in New Delhi for several days and giving interviews in the days leading up to the swearing-in and formation of the Narendra Modi government, although he had shif¬ted to the township of Lavasa several years ago. We have since been suitably informed that Mr Shourie had in fact been staying in his Delhi residence since Nov¬ember 2013 following an emergency medical complication inv¬olving an esteemed member of his family. We regret this unfortunate inference and stand corrected."

The idiot Anwaar has no clue about hinduism but reads a few meanings from some dictionary and poses as an expert.

As for varna, the theory is this according to Vedanta and Sankhya. Everything in the world is a mixture of three gunas-sattva, rajas and tamas. At the beginning of projection, all three are in perfect equilibrium. Then the balance is disturbed and creation(actually projection) starts. Everything is a mixture of the three gunas in varying proportions.

The three gunas are represented by colors-white, red and black.

Coming to human beings, a man's disposition is determined by the presence of these gunas.

A large sattva+ little rajas+little tamas makes a Brahmin.
Large rajas+ sattva+ tamas makes a Kshatriya
Rajas+tamas+little sattva makes a Vashya
A large tamas+ little rajas+ practically no sattva makes a sudra

As can be seen, this has nothing to do with one's birth. It is a description of one's mental makeup. That is why varna becomes a choice--because one has to choose a profession best fitted for one's mental disposition. The concept of Svadharma comes here. Choosing the profession that best expresses his mental disposition and that ENABLES HIM TO FURTHER IN THE PATH OF SPIRITUAL PROGRESS IS one's svadharma.

Associating colors with varna makes sense only in this context. It has nothing to do with external appearance. In sanskrit, one word has multiple meanings depending on the context. Applying meaning of one context to another context is foolishness.

Again I repeat, varna is choice-whereas jati(caste) is by birth.

Not all games can be promoted on international stage. Certain popular sports like football, cricket, basketball have an international appeal not because of its origin in some country but because of the game itself, factors like game rules, game interests, player profiles, beauty of game etc. Football did not originate in Germany, argentina, Italy but it remains the famous sport in these countries likewise cricket did not originate in Australia, India, Sri Lanka, South Africa but it remains a famous sport there. Chess is definitely popular in India atleast in urban cities, people do know who vishwanathan anand is. Indian Chess players are known worldwide It is generally assumed Chess originated in India and the saying right away thatchess originated in India would be incorrect. Kabaddi being not popular when compared to cricket and football is bacause of the game kabaddi itself, the game failed to evolve and gain popularity and not because of some some anti national sentiment.

Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings or any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.— Whoever, with deliberate and malicious intention of outraging the religious feelings of any class of citizens of India, by words, either spoken or written, or by signs or by visible representations or otherwise, insults or attempts to insult the religion or the religious beliefs of that class, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both."

Kerala schools stop serving midday meals during Ramzan

Midday Meals, it seems, are never far from controversy. The latest news on the front comes from Kerala, where, citing Ramzan fast as reasons, Government schools in the Malabar region have stopped serving food to children. Not only this, school timings have been altered as well. All this, despite the fact that Government schools impart education to students belonging to all religions, not just Islam.

According to a report in Malayalam daily Janmabhumi, the policy has been sanctioned by the Education Department and a majority of Government schools in districts such as Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasargod have complied with it, forcing students of all religions to go hungry despite Ramzan being a Muslim month of fasting and prayer.

Some Parent Teacher Associations have challenged this decision by sending a written complaint to the Minister’s Secretariat, but to no avail.

I have clearly pointed out that varna has several meanings and is distinct from jati. If it is called Jati, it is clearly referring to race.

Varna cannot mean colour in a society which was completely endogamous at that point of time and the four varnas were populated by people of the same ethnic stock.

Yes, everything is not hunky-dory in Spore. After the chaos of India, it comes as a huge relief to be in a place where everything works with almost clockwork precision. I also saw lots of stuff that I did not like but did not thunk of mentioning it.

Yes, Singapore is a highly regimented society. The pressure on the students is very high as is the case of the Indian middle classes. My host in Singapore teaches at a University there and I visited the campus. It is far better than our IITs in terms of ambience and amenities. However, the students seemed to lack the enthusiasm and energy of their counterparts elsewhere.

Singapore also does not take good care of their senior citizens. It was distressing for me to see infirm men and women in their 70's cleaning tables and floors in a food court in a glitzy mall.

In the final analysis, while Singapore looks like a clone of the west, it has miles to go when it comes to the way it takes care of its disadvataged citizens.

DLN,

For all other posts, I almost agree with you. But on this one, I have a different view maybe due to my proximity to S'pore. There are ONLY two universities (albeit very good) in Spore. Kids find it extremely difficult to get there. The biggest fear the kids below 13 years (as surveyed) is failing the exams (meaning not doing well. The fear supercedes fears like losing a parent, or divorce of parents or losing house to natural disaster etc). Spore guys are not in music, painting, movie making etc...They just ape US.

Spore is surrounded by sea on 3 sides and Mlaysia on other. Itis easy to police it as teh criminals cannot run away after committing a crime. You cannot dry clothes in balcony (you get a fine). You cannot select teh clour of your home, Your kids cannot piss on trees (when outdoors and far away). There are no birds, butterflies, flower and fruit bearing trees ,,,,Spore cannot win a medal in any sporting event in Asia leave apart world.

It is nothing more than a marketplace and life is extremely difficult. You will find women in 60s driving cabs on holidays.

This is off course my (rather caustic) opinion.

"The meaning of the word as used in the Rigveda has the literal meaning "outward appearance, exterior, form, figure, shape, colour"

Crap. Bollocks. Utter nonsense.

1. In modern Hindi, "drishya ka VARNAN karo" means DESCRIBE the scene. Only someone as erudite as Anwaar will translate it as COLOUR the scene.

2. The castes are described as CHATURVARNA or four CATEGORIES. If it means four COLOURS, what are the colours? Is there any colour specification for each caste? The only specification for each varna is tatva or quality.

One has to blinded by prejudice to say that Rig Veda uses varna to mean colour and appearance, be it an amateur Sanskrit "scholar" like Anwaar or an Indophobic European of suspect scholarship.

D.L.Narayan,

>> "Varna refers to attributes and not to colour."

From external appearance and color, how does it now become attributes? Do words change meaning to suit your theories? By the way it seems the fair skinned Aryans were the original colonizers, long before the Muslims or the British. No wonder RSS's pseudo-historians want to deny Aryan immigration!

The Palestine Solidarity Committee in India condemns the Indian government?'s half hearted response to brutality in Gaza

The Indian Government’s Fear of standing up to Israel: The Palestine Solidarity Committee in India condemns the Indian government’s half hearted response to brutality in Gaza
In the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, the entire Opposition walked out as the Government blocked any resolution on Gaza. In her statement, Sushma Swaraj, the Foreign Minister, refused to condemn Israel's brutal attacks on Gaza in which more than 500 Palestinians have died. Claiming that the Indian government's position had not changed under BJP from its earlier positions, Sushma Swaraj tried hard to equate Hamas rocket fire with Israel's massive bombings in Gaza, and the ground invasion that has sharply increased the casualties. She also tried to advance the argument that Hamas should have accepted the Egyptian ceasefire proposals, without addressing the question of Israel's lifting of the inhuman blockade of Gaza. The lifting of this blockade was a part of the 2012 ceasefire, on which Israel has reneged.
All these are significant departures from the positions that Indian governments have taken in the past, even while they moved closer to Israel. This is the first time that the Government of India has openly condemned Hamas, while refusing to condemn Israel's savage bombing and invasion of Gaza. This too happened after trying to prevent a discussion from taking place in the Parliament at all, with the specious plea that both Israel and Palestine are friendly countries. Sushma Swaraj was clearly trying to obscure the simple fact that this is not a battle between two equal sides: the “friendly” Palestinian nation is actually under occupation by the “friendly” Israeli nation.

@ Ramki, post 248

I am afraid that you have got me wrong. I was not restating the AIT or saying that caste divisions were based on colour. I was saying just the opposite.

The Aryans initially comprised nomadic tribal groups and their varnas were based on their profession. It was initially trivarna and as the nomadic tribes settled down and societies became more complex a new category was added and it became a chaturvarna system.

With urbanisation and expansion, the Aryans assimilated other ethnicities over a period of time but since the caste system was still based on merit, non-Aryans were present in all the varnas.

Varna refers to attributes and not to colour.

WHAT INDIA GAINED SUPPORTING ARABS AGAINST THEIR WARS WITH ISRAEL,UK AND WEST .

Faruki sahib we paid devastaingly high price under Nehru in supporting Arabs who turned out to be worst type   NAMKHARAMS and still are Namak Haram.

The Lancet: Leading doctors and scientists denounce Gaza violence

**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday 22 July, 2014**

More than 20 leading doctors and scientists* from the UK and Italy denounce ongoing Israeli military aggression in Gaza in a letter to The Lancet, published today [Tuesday 22 July].

“On the basis of our ethics and practice, we are denouncing what we witness in the aggression of Gaza by Israel,” write the authors. “We ask our colleagues, old and young professionals, to denounce this Israeli aggression.”

“We are appalled by the military onslaught on civilians in Gaza under the guise of punishing terrorists. This is the third large scale military assault on Gaza since 2008. Each time the death toll is borne mainly by innocent people in Gaza, especially women and children under the unacceptable pretext of Israel eradicating political parties and resistance to the occupation and siege they impose.”

The letter states that tightening blockades imposed on Gaza by Israel in the last year have not only caused starvation and poverty for residents of Gaza, but have also resulted in a dangerous lack of access to medicine and healthcare.

“Wounded and sick people cannot leave easily to get specialised treatment outside Gaza. Entries of food and medicines into Gaza have been restricted and many essential items for survival are prohibited. Before the present assault, medical stock items in Gaza were already at an all time low because of the blockade. They have run out now.”

“As we write, the BBC reports of the bombing of another hospital, hitting the intensive care unit and operating theatres, with deaths of patients and staff. There are now fears for the main hospital Al Shifa. Moreover, most people are psychologically traumatised in Gaza. Anyone older than 6 years has already lived through their third military assault by Israel.”

“None of these are military objectives. These attacks aim to terrorise, wound the soul and the body of the people, and make their life impossible in the future, as well as also demolishing their homes and prohibiting the means to rebuild.”

“We as scientists and doctors cannot keep silent while this crime against humanity continues. We urge readers not to be silent too. Gaza trapped under siege, is being killed by one of the world’s largest and most sophisticated modern military machine. The land is poisoned by weapon debris, with consequences for future generations. If those of us capable of speaking up fail to do so and take a stand against this war crime, we are also complicit in the destruction of the lives and homes of 1·8 million people in Gaza.”
