Ravi Patel, absolutely right. Rushdie has written articles in various international/Western publications attacking India and Hindus. And his criticism of Islamic fundamentalists and terrorists is always 'balanced' by some stupid, uncalled for, totally inaccurate comparison with so called "Hindu fundamentalists", thus creating an equal-equal relationship in the mind of the (naive, uninformed) reader.

  Yes, that  Rushdie BBC documentary on India to mark India's 40th anniversary of independence(1987), was simply awful. One was expecting a chronicle of India's achievements in those years, in industry, agriculture and science/technology, as well as the disappointment of not making more rapid progress in human development and other areas.

  Instead, the whole feature was an attack on India, Hindus, Hindu communalism, and the plight of Moslems, Sikhs, Dalits and whatever minorities. Simply sickening.

A very good firend of my dad,a man who is an academic and a man of great integrity and repute has told me that this thing Salman had made a absolutely vicious anti-India and anti-Hindu documentary for British television. Everything in the kitchen sink was thrown in at India. The alleged persecution of Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Dalits, Tribals and what not, both by the Indian state and by the Hindu majority. Besides, he has also penned many articles for various newspapers attacking India. Perhaps you are not aware of his past.

I would want to humbly point out that in a country like India - 120 crore people, 70% of them under 35, diverse in multidimensional ways (religion, region, history, geography, customs, caste, history, manners, etiquette, dressing ways, climate etc etc), with huge amount of population being severely deprived of basic necessities of life as in 2013 AD (piped water, toilet, clean food, school, healthcare , electricity, roads etc), the priority of the governments should be to remove this mass deprivation. Things like freedom to read offending books, watch offending paintings or view offending movies can wait, and governments with limited resources should first focus on solving basic problems. You would have heard of Maslov's hierarchy of needs for individual. The same applies to societies as well. india is pretty low in the pyramid and we need to get basics first and freedom to consume writings/paintings/movies that offend some sections of society, can wait some time. Please attempt to understand this (if you are really honest on India being a democracy) . The crippling power cuts/rolling blackouts in some Indian states and the acute drought affecting livelihood of farmers in some states are far, far more important topics of public concern than watching the movies of kamalhassan or reading the tales of Rushdie. That is, if you believe India is a deprived democracy and needs to deploy its scarce resources on pressing needs of the majority.

Following swiftly on the heels of communal violence in Dhule in which six members of the minority community were killed, comes the news of physical assault on Prof. Pramod Bhumbe, a Dalit teacher at the BR Ambedkar Samaj Karya Mahavidyalay. Friends in Dhule and Jalgaon inform us that Prof. Bhumbe while teaching his students about Indian social reforms movement, discussed certain episodes from the Hindu epic Ramayana. This was videographed by a student on his cell phone and the video clip later circulated and handed over to VHP and Bajrang Dal goons. The clip was quickly construed as proof of Prof. Bhumbe’s insult to Hinduism.

Teaching social reform movements without reference to the stinging critique of caste oppression and its implication in religious sanction is difficult anywhere. In Maharashtra, however, it is impossible. The legacy of Jyotiba and Savitri Phule, and Ambedkar is a living, thriving one. It survives in the fiery songs of Sambhaji Bhagat; in the hundreds of book festivals and cultural groups that can be found in the smallest towns and hamlets of the state. It is this culture of resistance, which often takes the form of sarcasm, and even ridicule of the superstitions of caste religion and its assorted institutions that Hindutva resents so much.

While Muslims are always cast as the other, radical Dalit critique cannot be domesticated and absorbed into the Hindutva identity. The two incidents—of communal violence and the attack on Prof. Bhumbe – are not unrelated. They reflect the growing confidence of the Hindutva forces and the state support they enjoy, even under the rule of their political opponents. Neither the SP not the DM of Dhule have been suspended by the state government despite the clear indictment of the administration in the January anti-minority violence by civil society investigations. Can an administration, which was hand in glove with the storm troopers of VHP and Bajrang Dal in January, be expected to seriously pursue the case against Prof. Bhumbe’s attackers? We appeal to all progressive and democratic groups in Maharashtra to ensure the security and safety of Prof Bhumbe, as the police which led the mobs against a vulnerable minority can hardly be entrusted to do so.

Moreover, as fellow teachers, we expect the classroom to be a space of developing and nurturing social critique—precisely what Prof. Bhumbe was doing. We stand in solidarity with him and condemn the right wing vigilantism.

 @ Anwaar  " your post is about conditions in Muslim countries. That is not the topic of this discussion". So says this, our believer. Mr Anwaar, after your own posts on the subject, do you even realise the irony of your own comment? Surely not. Not a very intellegent way to duck the issue of savagery and barbarism of many in your believeing fraternity. The first thing I do every morning is to thank the almighty, the merciful and the benevolent, for giving those who despise us infidels and mean nothing but harm to us and constantly plot our destruction, all the brawn but no brains. I am so convinced that the kafir brains will evetually be not match for the believer's brainless brawn!

The last para in my last post should have read "I am so convinced that the believer's brainless brawn will eventually be no match to the brain of the kafir"! My humble apoligies. A freudian slip indeed! See, this is wat happens when one interacts with the chosen ones. One at times gets infected with the virus. Mercifully, the almighty, the one so benevolent, has atleast granted us the un-chosen ones  a self-correcting mechanism!

What an idiotic and hateful comment from this Hindu Taliban! And that too from the land of Gandhi!

Indians should protect their fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution before this bastard police state starts physical feeding intellectuals to deranged mobs just so that they are satiated. 

Utter shame on all the politicians who couldn't protect the right to the freedom of speech and expression, but rather unleashed the mobs themselves. They should be banned from ever participating in politics. 

 And one more thing I may add. My biggest problem with the Sangh Parivar is that they want to Islamise the great and majestic religion of Hinduism. Nothing can be more ghastly for me than this noxious attempt at engineering my wonderful and faith!

I am also not pro RSS but without being prejudiced or indulging in pre judging of any kind , I find the mainstream Islam of the Qura'an and the hadith collections very similiar to the manusmrti in it's present form. Actually it makes the manusmrti look good.

I couldn't disagree with you more on the 'diseased vulture Rusdhie being kept out of india' remark.
Sir Rushdie is hardly a pamphleteer. He is a sophisticated man and is a genuine thinker.

I do not throw Manusmriti in your face and consider such  an impulse in you or in Ravi Patel to belong to the gutter where you two belong. There are plenty of things of common interest one can discuss.

 @ Just Joe King... The reason I do not trust this man Rushdie is because the man has in the past been absolutely vicious to India and Hindus. A very good firend of my dad,a man who is an academic and a man of great integrity and repute has told me that this thing Salman had made a absolutely vicious anti-India and anti-Hindu documentary for British television. Everything in the kitchen sink was thrown in at India. The alleged persecution of Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Dalits, Tribals and what not, both by the Indian state and by the Hindu majority. Besides, he has also penned many articles for various newspapers attacking India. Perhaps you are not aware of his past.

Ravi Patel, absolutely right. Rushdie has written articles in various international/Western publications attacking India and Hindus. And his criticism of Islamic fundamentalists and terrorists is always 'balanced' by some stupid, uncalled for, totally inaccurate comparison with so called "Hindu fundamentalists", thus creating an equal-equal relationship in the mind of the (naive, uninformed) reader.

  Yes, that  Rushdie BBC documentary on India to mark India's 40th anniversary of independence(1987), was simply awful. One was expecting a chronicle of India's achievements in those years, in industry, agriculture and science/technology, as well as the disappointment of not making more rapid progress in human development and other areas.

  Instead, the whole feature was an attack on India, Hindus, Hindu communalism, and the plight of Moslems, Sikhs, Dalits and whatever minorities. Simply sickening.
