"Many Indians feel that legitimising the LoC is a pragmatic and feasible solution."
LOC has been treated like the de facto border by both sides for the last six decades. When Indians complain of cross-border terrorism in J&K from the POK based militants, tacitly they are acknowledging the reality.
The rest of the world has also accepted the situation and they do not care any more. As long as the imbecile minds in India and Pakistan do not grow up and see reasons in a mature manner, the status quo will continue for many more years.

DL Narayan --- " Many Indians feel that legitimising the LoC is a pragmatic and feasible solution " ----- the problem is "many Indians" might feel this way but the Pakistanis might not. The Pakistanis describe Kashmir as IHK( Indian held Kashmir). It is dangerous to assume your opponent will think like you do. The Americans do this and that leads to the usual disastrous outcomes

this process where by a Muslim gang attacks a property (in the early hours of Saturday morning after their prayers) shows how the Hindu community in states like Pakistan have diminished so rapidly. Here in UP the state administration has to maintain appearances. If it was an entirely Muslim administration, the police SP would say "nothing happened". If you were in Pakistan (or any Muslim state for that matter) you would quickly understand the hopelessness of the situation

this article is written in a blatantly dishonest secular manner and allows propagandists like Anwaar to spin it how they like. Fact is it was a Muslim gang organised by their local warlord to attack Sikh property. Why can't the article report the facts. The BJP leader Anwaar quoted is correct , whether you like it or not.----- If you hide the facts, is that also not communal? Will it also not lead to more communalism, because people are angry about this transparent attempt to shield "members of a particular community"

" you can hire Chetan Bhagat as your ghost writer"

One thing is certain; Sonia G is incapable of writing her own book. She needs someone to do her job for her,  just as MMS did for a decade.

Chetan Bhagat is not a flunkey of the dynasty so he is ruled out. Mani Shankar Aiyar will be an excellent choice but he lacks Tharoor's elegance. Can't think of anyone else.....definitely not Kapil Sibal, his pretensions to being a poet notwithstanding.

The Nehru way of writing books is to write the books while in jail.

I sincerely hope Sonia gets convicted in the National Herald case as soon as possible. Then she will be in jail and then she can write her book from jail. She will thus have a golden chance to follow the footsteps of Nehru.

The stupidity of trading land will be evident with a tiny example.

In the 1970s, Indira Gandhi gave away Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka. We had it and we gave it to Sri Lanka without getting anything in return.

The fishermen problem we have till date is because of that. The areas around the place is the rich catchment area. Indian coast is not that rich in fish. So our fishermen have to cross into Lankan waters. They get arrested. This has been a recurring theme for the last 30 years.

There was no need to give katchatheevu in the first place. Indira thought she was improving relations with Lanka. It is only causing more problems today.

You are speaking like Anwaar. Let me simplify the question. Do you think there is really a territorial dispute or is the dispute because of Pakistan's greediness?

Both are different issues and requires different responses. The trouble with people like you is that you have confused the two.

"You have the right to disagree vehemently but the onus of telling us why rests with you."

Actually I did. Read my posts again.

As for what do I propose---you have said it. Have an active policy to break Pak in 15-20 years. Then the situation will be ripe.

Let me repeat what I said 1) TO think that making LoC will satisfy Pak and that it wont create any problem in future is plain foolishness. It is extremely naive. Even if you give the whole of Kashmir, Pak will not be satisfied. They will start demanding Punjab 2) Even more basic-trading land for peace makes the country spineless and a eunuch. Such a country does not deserve independence in the first place.

What do you propose? Nuking Pakistan out of existence? Or wait for that failed state to self destruct and then reintegrate PoK into the Indian Union?

Come up with a practical solution instead of resorting to pseudosecular style ad hominem attacks. Many Indians feel that legitimising the LoC is a pragmatic and feasible solution. You have the right to disagree vehemently but the onus of telling us why rests with you.

If Sonia will indeed "write" her autobiography, it will create publishing history.

By all counts, the story of an Italian girl from a family of very modest means who went to Cambridge to work as an au pair and went on to become one of the most powerful (and richest) women in history is extremely fascinating. Add to it a fairy tale romance with an extremely handsome prince and there is nothing more one could ask for.

But there is more to this saga - assasinations, espionage, political intrigues, palace coups, domestic squabbles, the works.

With so much masala, there is no need to fictionalise the events. However, I am afraid that the autobiography will be high on fiction and low on facts.

PS: Given Ms. Gandhi's writing skills, I am sure she will need a ghost writer. May I propose Shashi Tharoor, an acclaimed author of both fiction and non-fiction for this post.

Moreover, the basic premise of trading land for peace is wrong. You can sometimes do it as a purely tactical measure but to use it as a strategy is plain wrong and shows the country to be a eunuch-nothing else.

Tomorrow we can give up tracts in Arunachal to make peace with China. We can give up Sikkim. Where do you stop this?

The current climate does not allow for retaking PoK. But to give up is plain stupidity and cowardliness. We have to keep waiting for the right opportunity(rather take steps to create the right opportunity) and then take the land back. That is manliness.

@ Bonita - "It's not going to happen."

It might not happen but that is the only way forward, the only solution - Israel and Palestine co-existing in relative peace. Whether Israel will withdraw fully or partially from Arab areas depends on how the peace process moves forward once it is set in motion. Even the US will not support Israel if it is unwilling to vacate areas occupied in the 71 war. Right now, the only impediment to implementation of the 2 decade old Oslo accords is the belligerence of Palestinian militant groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

Reg Kashmir, I am in full agreement with you. I strongly believe that legitimising the LoC as the international border is the only solution possible.

The Cyprus situation is similar to Kashmir's. In 1974, when the pro-Enosis (union with Greece) army staged a coup, the Turkish army invaded and occupied one third of the island. A peace was brokered and there was a peaceful exchange of populations between the Turkish North and Greek South. Incidentally, in 1984, I had spent a week as a tourist there and in Nicosia, I was warned not to take pictures at the border which cuts through the city. Cyprus is relatively peaceful and there is no desire for reunification of the island.

# 2/D65: ... "And our pseudo-scholars people keep blaming the victims!" - Faruki .... Does Modi belong to pseudo-scholars (whatever that may mean - I thought, pseudo-seculars is the right term to be used in this forum)? .... Anyway, India under Modi's command has voted to condemn Israel for violation of human rights in the international stage. What more can Hindu India do in this issue? It seems the converts are to blame Hindus whatever the situation is in their Islamic Ummah world beyond India's sovereignty. Worth noting that in Kashmir Valley Islam has cleansed out the Hindus - a politically similar situation, and the Muslims are silent on this !

What ISIS , Taliban, Boko-Haram is doing is what Mahmud Ghazni, Ghori, Aurangzen, Jinnah , Sikandar Butshikan, Nadir Shah ( it would fill a book just to name them all )  etc have done to Hindus in Indian subcontinent.

How do you think present day Pakistan, Kashmir Valley , Bangladesh, Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar, Murshidabad,  etc , which were almost 100% Hindus around 700AD , have either exterminated and wiped out Hindus or are overwhelming muslim majority ?

If Hindus and India is to survive, it must start with a honest conversation about what Islam has perpetrated in Indian subcontinent.

DLN (#8),

, my support will be for a Israeli withdrawal to the pre-1967 borders

Never going to happen.

I lived in Cyprus for three years. The island is divided in two - the northern part calling itself - "The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" but "Area Illegally Occupied by Turkey" by the south, which is the legitimate govt of Cyprus - the whole island.

In 2004 Kofi Annan proposed a reunification plan which was accepted by the North and rejected by the south. The sticking point for the south was that the plan did not allow for the repatriation of all Turkish settlers who migrated to Cyprus after 1974 and return of the land to the rightful owners who had fled to the south after the Turkish invasion.

To expect Israel to evict and resttle all those who have sttled in the West Bank after 1967 is wishful thinking.

PS. Even if Israel does agree to revert to the 1967 border, the next demand will be for it to revert to the 1948 UN approved borders.

PPS. I also believe that there is no way that POK (Azad Kashmir, if you wish) will ever become Indian. It's time to convert the LoC into an International border but that requires political will.

Aren't you ashamed of your lack of basic comprehension skills? Losers not only become incoherent and abusive, they also become illogical.

To repeat, I said, "What else can one expect when Hamas is raining missiles on Israel? During hostilities, the hawks silence the doves."

To dumb it down for your benefit, Israelis who are inclined to be more generous and accomodating are called DOVES. Those who are rabid hardliners are called HAWKS.

When faced with aggression, the HAWKS win.

I was stating a fact, not taking sides.

Once the violence stops and Palestinians accept the right of Israel to exist, my support will be for a Israeli withdrawal to the pre-1967 borders and the establishment of a Palestinian state.

As long as the Arabs attack Israel, I will support their right to act in  self defense.
