Israel is not a submissive pseudo secular sotie peddling state. It is surrounded by Islamic fundamentalist states who have been at war with it since it was born. Their lives had been made misearable during those times. They will not, repeat will not take things lying down like India. Take the Entebbe episode or the Israel journos who escaped captivity by rogues fundamentalist islamist terrorists in Kashmir, they will not take it lying down. All other countries including India can keep crying foul or take up strong stance against terrorism and root it out. All of us know how much ISI was involved in Kashmir, building up terror bases in Punjab, the 26/11 massacre, what do we do, we just twiddle our thumbs and cry FOUL. Let us stop this Israel bashing. If you take one of my eye out, then I will pull both your eyes out until you guys stop this behaviour and integrate with others. Why the hell are you not opening your mouth or writing reams of paper or getting interviews about Shias, Ahmedias and you name any other Muslim sect except Sunnis being EXTERMINATED in countries like Iraq, Syria and Pakistan. Why this monumental silence eh?

I am disappointed to see some comments and the general tone of the article in the first place. The Government is 60 days old. In Tamilnadu when the DMK comes to power they quickly press the UNDO button of all things done by the predecessor which would have been ADMK. Be it Rain water harvesting, growth of power generation and you name it, they reverse it. The ADMK is not to be left behind in this. JJ comes to power and she immediately presses UNDO button on whole lot things like the Direct Farmers market, the mini bus scheme, the common village scheme and what not. Do all of you want the country to run like that? Undo all good and bad things done by the previous government. Like somebody pointed out here you dont win elections consecutively by not working and not developing or not delivering on promises. Bringing back black money, getting to arm twist swiss bankers are not an easy job. The impact of the changes being promulgated or implemented will take time to be felt. Please do not forget that just because you have a clear majority in LS, Bill passing is easy. The GOP and its great insecure allies still have numbers in the Rajya Sabha. It will take a lot of effort to make meaning ful legislation if Congress and Co keep opposing and sending every bill to the waste basket in Rajya Sabha. Peace.

"Sonia has hit back by saying she will write her own book and explain. While this is a nice, rhetorical sound bite, nobody seriously expects her to produce a tell-all or candid autobiography. After 10 years of absolute though proxy power, she has internalised that old mantra, "Never apologise, never explain".

It is more likely the intellectual cum public relations eco-system that surrounds the Nehru-Gandhis will spend the coming weeks excoriating and excommunicating Natwar, and attempting to reduce him to a non-person. It would be so typical of Delhi's beautiful people: all high drama and low politics.

The vast majority of Sunnis in India as well as in the world have denounced ISIS, - Anwaar (#5)

NOT CORRECT. Anwaar should read

Half-truths and lies: A biased Urdu press can harm India's secular image - Firstpost

Akhbar-e-Mashriq is widely regarded as a balanced and sober Urdu daily published from Kolkata but recently, it ran an uncharacteristically sensational front page with the banner headline, Islami Shiddat Pasand Hamare Haqeequee Mohafiz ("Islamic extremists our real protectors"). It was inspired by a quote from one of the Indian nurses who had returned from Iraq the previous day after being held captive by the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis).

The nurse had reportedly praised Isis fighters describing them as "good people" who had behaved decently with them and were concerned about their safety. That brief comment was enough for Mashriq to translate it into a tub-thumping endorsement of what is arguably one of the most vicious jihadi groups whose leader Abu Bakr Baghdadi, now a self-proclaimed "caliph", is listed as a "global terrorist" with a $10 million prize for information leading to his capture.

While playing up the nurse’s remark, the paper glossed over the version of two other workers who had accused Isis of "brutality" and said that its men behaved like "barbarians". It also played down reports of Isis attacks on Shias and historic Shia sites.

Regrettably, Mashriq is not the only Urdu newspaper whose coverage of the gory events in West Asia has been so shamelessly biased. Worryingly, much of the Urdu language media in India sounds like an Isis mouthpiece. Anyone reliant solely on the Urdu press for information and opinion (and a large section of Muslims reads only Urdu newspapers) would think that Isis is a benevolent and devout religious organisation dedicated to upholding Islamic law and values rather than a blood-thirsty terror group.

Does that sound like condemnation? It may to Anwaar but doesn't to me.

Akash,

There is absolutely no reason to give up our claim on PoK. If you think that, by making LoC as a border, you are solving the Indo_Pak dispute, you are simply deluding and making a fool of yourself. - (#13)

For whatever reason, right or wrong, Kashmir is a "disputed" territory. If the LoC becomes an international border, that ends the dispute. Any incursion therefore, become an act of war and can be dealt with as such.

Moreover, the basic premise of trading land for peace is wrong. (#14)

Possesion is nine tenths of the law. You can only trade something if you have it, which in the case of POK we don't. Recognising the LOC as an international border is only a recognition of reality. We had an opportunity to reclaim POK in 1948 and again in 1972, but chose not to do so. To believe that we can regain it is a pipe dream.

I am certainly not suggesting that we part with any land - either to Pakistan or China - which is under our sovereign control, but I am definitely not advocating that we go to war to reclaim those territories which we claim as ours.

DLN (#12),

The Cyprus situation is similar to Kashmir's. In 1974, when the pro-Enosis (union with Greece) army staged a coup, the Turkish army invaded and occupied one third of the island. A peace was brokered and there was a peaceful exchange of populations between the Turkish North and Greek South.

Peaceful exchange NO. However, if you mean the that there was no partition like slaughter you are correct.

Incidentally, in 1984, I had spent a week as a tourist there and in Nicosia, I was warned not to take pictures at the border which cuts through the city. Cyprus is relatively peaceful and there is no desire for reunification of the island.

Cyprus is very peaceful and UNFICYP (United Nations Forces in Cyprus) troops are having a ball. They have no work to do, much like UNMOGIP.

I lived in Cyprus from 2004-2007 10 minutes walk from the "Green Line". It is peaceful and there is no restriction on crossing in either direction. In fact residents of the Turkish occupied north frequently cross over to avail of state medical facilities in the south as the Cyprus govt states that they are citizens of Cyprus.

Is their animosity - probably. I visited the north with a colleague and drove to the extreme North Eastern tip. On our way back we stopped for lunch and when we returned to the car found it blocked in. While wondering what to do, an old bystander asked "Are you Greek?" I replied, "Do we look Greek? My friend is Ukrainian and I'm Indian" to which the old man replied, "OK. I'll help you then" and whistled for the guy who had (deliberately) blocked us to move his vehicle.

As for their being no desire for reunification, I can confidently state that you are wrong.

"The vast majority of Sunnis in India as well as in the world have denounced ISIS" so spake Anwar from Dallas. I don't see any such denouncement in India or elsewhere. Except some half hearted hesitant noises by Muslims which sound more like suppressed admiration of ISIS. But I see lot off denouncement of the Israel about Gaza and even boycott of American and Israeli goods by Muslims in India.

Even this Anwar in a comment below has tried to rationalize the horrendous deeds of ISIS by treating it as a part of  some trend. Anwar seems to be admirer of the ISIS.

Hamas is not alone in how they use muslim civilians as cannon fodder to push their political point -- just take the example of the sunni aholes in india. They want to provoke a violence like in gujarat in 2002, where innocent muslims get killed, and then they get to recruit more disaffected muslims for their violent jihad.  Lather. Rinse Repeat. Anwaar here is the the outer "liberal" shell to provide a cover to these violent sunni mot@$#%ers to recruit more jihadis. Should not be surprising given that anwaar here is a supporter of the terrorist group CAIR.

If they did, they would have accepted a ceasefire a few hundred deaths before, but no, they want the violence as a piece of propaganda that the "liberal" jihadis like anwaar and all the duplicitious mother#$R%ers at outlook and all the aholes who provide support to that propanganda with the articles they write on outlook.

What about the persecution and huge reduction in numbers of even more ancient communities of Hindus in the subcontinent, in areas comprising Afghanistan, Pakistan, the state of Jammu and Kashmir,  and Bangladesh?

Mayaben Kodnani granted bail by Gujarat High Court. Not surprising news. Her ill health, depression, mental condition etc. weighed with High Court which has observed that the charge of conspiracy u/s 120B is not proved beyond reasonable doubt. Her sentence is suspended.
My client Maulana Ibrahim Umarji was arrested in 2003. He was also charged u/s 120B. He was branded as the chief mastermind behind Godhra carnage. He was not granted bail by the Godhra sessions court. POTA was slapped on him. POTA court also refused bail. High Court did not grant bail. Supreme court also refused bail. He languished in jail for 10 years. Only because he was Muslim. Finally declared he was innocent and acquitted. Now he is dead.
Since he was Muslim, all efforts were made to ensure that he was not released on bail, whereas for Mayaben, all efforts are made to ensure that she is granted bail and her sentence is reversed.
Jesus Christ said - all are equal in the eyes of God. Ambedkar's Constitution said - all are equal in the eyes of law. Unfortunately in Gujarat, the criminal law is not equal and uniform for all. The standards are different for Hindus and Muslims. We do not need uniform civil code. All that we need is uniform criminal code.

D.L.Narayan,

>> "What else can one expect when Hamas is raining missiles on Israel? During hostilities, the hawks silence the doves."

How can you be so ignorant? Reuven Rivlin was elected President of Israel on June 10th, 2014, before Hamas launched the missile attack. He is a staunch opponent of the two-state solution agreed to in the Oslo Pact.

>> "Once the violence stops and Palestinians accept the right of Israel to exist, my support will be for a Israeli withdrawal to the pre-1967 borders and the establishment of a Palestinian state."

If you think that is a just solution, just say it without putting conditions on it. The violence exists because Israel just does not want a Palestinian state to exist.

Israeli Crimes - Getting Away With It for Over 60 Years

By Chris Doyle

“But what gets under the skin of so many is that whilst the Assad regime is sanctioned and condemned, Israel is lauded, protected and given a multi-billion dollar annual sponsorship deal with the United States. ”

According to Gerard Horton from Military Court Watch: "The danger is Israel will sleep walk into pariah status if it is seen to remain above the law." Horton tells me that Israel is "operating in a parallel universe, a completely different set of principles seem to apply to this conflict."

How many assaults on Israelis were mounted by the Hamas between June 2003 and June 2004 using these tunnels? Probably very few if any. So these tunnels were being used to bring in food, medicines and other necessities, thus frustrating Israel's illegal bliockade subjecting 1.5 million Gaza citizens to an inhuman imprisonment in a small sliver of land. Destroying these tunnels is a top priority for Netanyahu in order to restore the inhuman imprisonment.
