" Since you started blaming the Brits for Indias problems, I only assumed that you will start blaming Aurangazeb next.'

Facts are facts, period. I said Brits exploited India economically to drive home the point that it is absurd to insist that people who are no longer alive should not be criticised. I have no intention of discussing history or economics with you.

The thread is about Nehru and if you think that the legacy of a man who is stone dead for 50 years should not be discussed, go tell Hamid Ansari and Sheila Dikshit that Nehru's ideas are no longer relevant because he died half a century ago.

I can see where this is going now. So we blame Aurangazeb as the cause of Indias decline today?

Perhaps blame the english for yesterdays train accident?

We have to learn from the Brits who built their nation from scratch after the wars. Or perhaps the Japanese ( if religion is an obstacle for learning )

Just like you, I ( and the 'congenital Bengali leftists' ) too can sit and crib about many more problems in everyday society. It is nobodys case that there are not many many problems and deficiences in the Indian democracy.

The point is, it is immature ( nay right wing ideology ) to keep blaming a dead man for todays problems - many of which may actually be even traced to communal parties occupying centrestage politics.

You claim to be a rationalist but fail to see the connection between cause and effect. The British have left India nearly 7 decades ago so we should not blame them for impoverishing us through economic exploitation? Since Gustave Eiffel died over 90 years ago, the tower should be renamed?

BTW, learn what decadence means. Nehru may have led a decadent lifestyle but India cannot be called that by any stretch of imagination. Learning the correct meaning of words will help you avoid producing such malapropisms in the future.

>>>>> "If not Nehru, whom do you blame for the failure in eradication of poverty? He was in firm control of all the economic decisions taken during his 17 years at the helm".

D.L.Narayan

Congenitally leftist Bengali Meholanabis planned the USSR model 5- year plans with the ardent blessings of Nehru. It's sheer arrogance of these guys to think that they could plan for the entire country and its myriad needs. The result is there for us to see.Only the naive and the gullible see merit in those plans of Nehru. Thanks to Modi at least now the purposeless planning commission has been wound up.

After twelve 5 year plans our literacy rate and the status of primary schools remain abysmal, Our railways do not inspire any except that they have rich history of being bequethed with readily laid longest routes. The status of ticket availability and quality of travel on trains remain same or even worse. In theree decades, I have not noted any worth while improvements in the care of coaches.

Exccept for islands of excellence in private sector and a couple of central Hospitals, we have no worth while world class hospitals or health care system, and a citizen today has  to spend from his own savings  in his pursuit of health leaving him poorer. The poor and the middle classes are worst sufferers.

Till Mr.Vajpayee ordered golden quadrilateral highways, our roads were a joke.As if to emphasise the fact that it is not Nehru's idea, the UPA govt left the whole idea of further expansion of this project in cold storage.

The state monopoly in power production left us powerless even in this day of modern times and we face power cuts, which is unthinkable in any country with global ambitions. Inverter manufacturing and selling became another big business. Mr.Sunil Mittal is one such rich guy who  made enough money out of power shortages.

And what about our life line- water? Even today we the Chennaites depend on the sparingly supplied water from the century old British built  Kilpauk water works and that also is no real potable water supply. The same story in many Indian cities. A new economy of Water tank mafia took over the water supply instead of efficient piped supply. But we pride lecturing in the world forums on energy conservation, green house gas effects etc ..

I ask those Nehru admirers what is the lasting legacy that the 5 year plans have brought to India except systematic corruption through political patronage, misery out of shortages and stifling of entrepreneurship? These stupid plans left generations in despair ,shoddiness at every level of govt functioning and all walks of life.

"His faulty economic policies are the main reason for India .."

There are MANY other reasons for the failure of Indian democracy, in the five decades ( and many five year plans ) that have passed since Nehru roamed the planet.

The FIRST to be blamed is the farcical judiciary, which has made fair business difficult. In a climate of corruption and unchecked cronyism ( which is what pays for politics ), no real entrepreneur can ever survive or thrive.

Every businessman, particularly multibillionaires like Ambani ( Indira Gandhi ), Tata ( Nehru ) and Adani ( Modi ), needs political support. Adani is no exception.

Once again, the absence of the judiciary made this easy, emboldening politicians to be corrupt, casteist, and yes, communal too.

"Blaming stone dead Nehru for todays evils is like blaming Aurangazeb for Gujarat 2002!"

Why do you make such ridiculous comments? Nehru cannot be held responsible for everything that is wrong today, but the responsibility for Kashmir lies mainly with him. When one takes on a responsibility, he is solely responsible for either its success or its failure.

His faulty economic policies are the main reason for India lagging far behind its peers who were at the same stage of economic development when India became independent.

Is nt Modi making public his association with Adani actually a matter of national disgrace to the PMO? Please make up your mind!"

You seem to be incapable of understanding the complexity of the issue so let me simplify it for you.

1. The PSUs have, with rare exceptions, been a failure and a huge drain on the exchequer.

2. Nehru did not encourage the private sector but he did favour some capitalists like the makers of the shoddy Ambassador cars who made shoddy products but made huge profits nevertheless.

3. Adani runs a profitable enterprise which contributes to the national exchequer thousands of crores.

4. I do not favour crony capitalism and all the instances of 2G, 3G, CWG and coalgate corruption are directly a result of UPA misrule. You accuse Adani of benefitting from crony capitalism without any proof other than getting land at subsidised rates. State governments normally offer such incentives to attract investment. It is not crony capitalism. Crony capitalism is showing undue favours to a select few.

The bottom line is that India is lagging far behind its peers like China and South Korea due to the flawed policies of Nehru.

Blaming stone dead Nehru for todays evils is like blaming Aurangazeb for Gujarat 2002!

" 1. Poverty - Blaming a man stone dead now for five Decades, is a trait that the right wing has 'evolved'. .

Hitler has been 'stone dead' for nearly seven decades. Whom does one blame for the holocaust?

Can you 'blame' Hitler for Germanys rise today, as he too ruled Germany? Dont you ( want to ) see the interim?

2. Dynastic politics

The lack of a credible alternative ( the best the right wing could throw up is Modi ) cannot be blamed on the Queen Heiress or her predecessors.

There was Dr Rajagopalachari, who was far superior in all respects.

You ( or perhaps any other religionist, like Modi today ) could have stood for election too, and if you won, would have been PM too! It is juvenile to blame someone since he won elections in the past. This is immature argument, liked only by religionist types.

3. Kashmir problem, article 370 etc

A complex problem that has no solution ( except by force ) even today. Again, no logic in blaming one person.

While Sardar Patel was entrusted the responsibility ....

No one is perfect. Perhaps Nehru was not either. But you cant blame his imperfection for everything. Why is there trouble till today? Vajpayee too became PM only in the last decade

4. Pampering the PSUs,

The alternative - Pampering the cronies like Adani - instead has replaced it, and India has already lost fortunes as in the Coal gate scam, 2G etc, in both Congie and BJP governments.

"By the way the Western political leaders and editorialists and columnists in the top Western and Indian newspapers have no difficulty in making the distinction."

It is not an easy task to make the distinction as you claim it is. There is no shortage of ambiguous content in the scriptures which the Islamists utilise to justfy their acts.

Salim Mansur, an academic at a Canadian university wrote an excellent piece on this topic.

" Since 9/11 the West has been confounded with the question whether Islam and Islamism are one and same, or if there is a critical distinction to be drawn between the two. How this question is answered has profound implications for understanding and explaining the immense convulsion seizing the Muslim world"

"Islam, a religion, cannot be turned into a handmaiden of politics; when this occurs, Islam is turned into Islamism. Its defining characteristic is its intolerance of others, including Muslims, and glorification of violence against all who disagree. The conflict inside the Muslim world might be characterized as one between tyranny and freedom, even if that tyranny is packaged in God's name. The strategically right thing to do is provide moral and material assistance to Muslims struggling against Islamists."

"Any objective and impartial analysis of the convulsion in the Muslim world, as the one taken hold of Egypt, will find that in the midst of all the difficulties of poverty, corruption, underdevelopment, cultural backwardness, economic stagnation, military misrule, ethnic and sectarian divisions, gender inequality and misogyny, there is the deep division among Muslims on how they understand Islam and their place in the world as Muslims. It is this almost irreconcilable divide between Islamist Muslims and anti-Islamist Muslims that exacerbates all other divisions of class, sect, and ethnicity"

If not Nehru, whom do you blame for the failure in eradication of poverty? He was in firm control of all the economic decisions taken during his 17 years at the helm. To put it in perspective, look at the economic growth rates of countries like China and Soutg Korea who were in the same economic league when India became independent. Even Pakistan outperformed India till Ziaul Haque ruined Pakistan.

Hitler has been 'stone dead' for nearly seven decades. Whom does one blame for the holocaust?

2. Dynastic politics

The lack of a credible alternative ( the best the right wing could throw up is Modi ) cannot be blamed on the Queen Heiress or her predecessors.

There was Dr Rajagopalachari, who was far superior in all respects. There was no shortage of talent even within the Congress when Nehru's daughter was foisted on the country.

3. Kashmir problem, article 370 etc

A complex problem that has no solution ( except by force ) even today. Again, no logic in blaming one person.

While Sardar Patel was entrusted the responsibility for integrating hundreds of princely states into the Indian Union, Nehru reserved the responsibility of integrating Jammu and Kashmir exclusively for himself, either because he was himself a Kashmiri or because of his friendship with Sheikh Abdulla. Article 370 and an offer of plebiscite were done due to Nehru's insistence in the face of stiff opposition from Patel and Ambedkar.

4. Pampering the PSUs,

The alternative - Pampering the cronies like Adani - instead has replaced it, and India has already lost fortunes as in the Coal gate scam, 2G etc, in both Congie and BJP governments.

Nehru also had his crony capitalists whom he pampered by ensuring that there was no competition, no investment in R & D. The makers of Ambassador cars, Vespa scooters, for example, made billions with effortless ease by producing shoddy products.

As far as Adani is concerned, even assuming that he is Modi's crony, his business is not a drain on the economy. It produces power, runs ports, provides employment to thousands of people, and contributes thousands of crores to the national exchequer as taxes. Only an absolute ignoramus will equate the white elephant PSUs with high)y efficiently run private sector enterprises.

DU's Sanskrit dept kickstarts project to prove Aryans were not foreigners

NEW DELHI: Delhi University's Sanskrit department has thrown its weight behind a project that could possibly rewrite history to fit the Sangh Parivar's view of India's past — a move that's likely to gain political colour considering the resounding victory of the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party in the general election.

But the Hindu nationalist narrative, as espoused by the Sangh Parivar and its affiliates, disputes what they call a European-imposed narrative. They say the Aryans were an indigenous people — not migrants.

The project was announced last week by Delhi University's Sanskrit department in the presence of OP Kohli -- a BJP leader recently appointed Gujarat governor -- and vice-chancellor Dinesh Singh at an event marking 60 years of Sanskrit research.

The project is unlikely to find the support of the university's history department. "This is a meaningless debate. We all now know that the entire human race can trace its ancestry back to Africa. So how does it matter whether Aryans were indigenous to our country or were outsiders? There are far more serious issues of archaeological and scientific research that need to addressed in our country," said Nayanjot Lahiri, a professor of archaeology in the history department at Delhi University.

There's no evidence to back the claim, said renowned historian DN Jha, who specialises in ancient and medieval Indian history.

Ignorance, lies pose as truth in RSS' history books

by Sitaram Yechuri

The latest incident of the dismissal of 11 Dalit students from a BJP state government-run school in Bikaner, Jaipur, on the grounds that they were drinking water from an earthen pot earmarked for an upper caste teacher once again highlights the continuing caste and social oppression in our country.

It is indeed the irony of our times that on the same day the RSS chief released three books authored by a BJP spokesperson, carrying forewords by three top RSS leaders attributing the genesis of Dalits, tribals and many other oppressed groups to “Muslim invasion in medieval times”. RSS leaders claim that these castes had come into existence due to atrocities by foreign invaders and did not exist in Hindu religion earlier (The Hindustan Times, September 22).

The RSS emboldened by the central government under its political arm, the BJP, has intensified its efforts, to validate a common Hindu thread to unify all groups under one Hindu identity. For this, it is essential that the history of the lands constituting our great country today is rewritten according to their narrative. This is essential for carrying forward the RSS ideological project of converting the modern secular democratic Indian republic into their conception of a ‘Hindu rashtra’.

The entire diversity of culture, traditions, language and customs of the people who have inhabited India over the centuries is sought to be straitjacketed into a monolithic ‘Hinduism’. Secondly, an external enemy (i.e. external to Hindus) needs to be created — the Muslims — against whom a hate campaign can be whipped up for achieving this objective.

Modi is intelligently remaining silent about the demonstrations in Hong Kong and not supporting it, so that China maintains friendly relations with India.

2 D DLN,

You asked for impartiality. I will TRY to be impartial here:

1. Poverty - his economic policies ensured ....

Blaming a man stone dead now for five Decades, is a trait that the right wing has 'evolved'. .

2. Dynastic politics

The lack of a credible alternative ( the best the right wing could throw up is Modi ) cannot be blamed on the Queen Heiress or her predecessors.

3. Kashmir problem, article 370 etc

A complex problem that has no solution ( except by force ) even today. Again, no logic in blaming one person.

4. Pampering the PSUs,

The alternative - Pampering the cronies like Adani - instead has replaced it, and India has already lost fortunes as in the Coal gate scam, 2G etc, in both Congie and BJP governments.

5. Lack of focus on much needed land reforms

Possibly one area where the Congress Should be blamed, but as a Party, and yes, to an extent Nehru shares the blame for the period he was alive, but what happened when Vajpayee ruled after that?

From the above questions, one suspects that right wingers are out to discredit Nehru, because he treated all religions fairly, a trait they dislike as it is against their ideology.

" >> " If there is a distinction, one will explain it."

>>> "As if I have not done it umpteen times! "

You have written several times ad nauseum about Dalits and Sati and Manusmriti. Surely you can explain the distinction one more time.

You are never short of excuses when it comes to evading inconvenient questions.

" I have become a gentleman, and started to strut, look at my suit and boot, like a white man from London"

These lines describe Pankaj Mishra perfectly. He is a typical WOG who has made a career for himself by denigrating his land of birth. Macaulay would have been immensely proud of him.

He does not allow facts to come in the way of whatever he is trying to say so it is not surprising that he changes the name of the film from a plain Sagina to a more easier to ridicule Raju (Modi) Ban Gaya Gentleman.

Right now, writing anti-Modi diatribes is a lucrative source of income for the likes of Pankaj Mishra, who are, with apologies to Vinod Mehta, a "smug, selfserving, patronising, opinionated lot" who write with the sole purpose of reassuring one another that they know far better what is good for India than the people of India themselves. It betrays their contempt for democracy.

After Jayalalithas conviction, ModiSonia Moneyspinner Pros are taking classes on:

'How to TAKE money" - a course for political greenhorns

If you want to start using this ModiSonia Moneyspinner Pro, then the only thing you really need is a to win an election ( even Panchayat level should do ) and have a few cronies.

So why not get started and start earning now?

The success rate is higher than 99%. And what is more - there is a tie-up with Adani-Ambani-Tata-Cronycrony for the six session module.

There are a lot of internet scams about, claiming that they will help you make Rs. 10000 per hour but they are nothing but scams. The ModiSonia moneyspinner is a reliable and free resource that is available to all green horn politicians.

Veteran looter Pawar told me, "I feel a lot more comfortable about my finances now; no more panicking about how I will escape unscrupulous judges. I just wish I had known about this before"

"It's unbelievable how easy it was and how quickly I was able to change my life around. Now I'm making average 30000 an hour with 10-15 hours of work, I'm even considering appointment as Governor as retirement bonus". Yeddyurappa remarked.

So there, readers, now you know about it too. Enjoy!

Religionism is no more a laughing matter. What should be a matter for depressed and mentally afflicted souls within the confines of their homes, and probably mental asylums, is now played out on the streets.

Persistent indoctrination over millennia leave the susceptible with feelings of unease
when they attempt to ditch the ingrained silly ‘beliefs’ inherited from similarly misinformed forebears. Many take an apathetic route and run with the various childish theosophical myths passed down through the generations via pious, shallow-thinking naivety - preferring illusion to reality - fantasy to truth.

Immense religious propaganda has meant that Goddism has reached a peak in India, with even mainstream politics being hijacked by the right wing. But that is not to mean goddism is a laughing matter. Far from it. India, has already lost as many men to religious violence, as any other nation, and continues to do so.

>> In which Pankaj Mishra defends racists: From the article

It actually reminded me of “Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (Raju Becomes a Gentleman),” one of many Bollywood films to assert that rising Indians can conquer the world in their own style…..In one of these movies, a song mocking the anglicized Indian — that in rough translation goes something like this: “I have become a gentleman, and started to strut, look at my suit and boot, like a white man from London”

Did RBGG also have this? The original was in Sagina

From British Raj to licence and permit Raj is  Nehru's contribution to India.

We might have won political freedom from the Brits but we had lost our economic freedom on the same day he took over as PM. Surrounded by such rabid communists like VK Menon, Mehalonabis etc and carried away by his personal ambitions for fame in the international scene, he did gross injustice to the entrepreneurial capabilities of Indians and that left us poorer than those nations that got independence later than us. The glaring disparities that we see in India owe much to his policies which tried to control every aspect of making a legitimate living.

Very unfortunate. Dinesh Trivedi had said that he needed more financial resources to improve the safety record of the railways. That must be the priority. One part of that would be a gradual increase in passenger fares.

Saroja (#1),

Is that in Modi's handwriting? HELP!!! That can't be. That is very similar to my handwriting. Say someone else wrote it & Modiji signed it.

Bitterness seems to be eating your soul if this is the only thing you have to write.
