Opinion COMMENTS
Dealing with abductions is partly a game of patience, partly a psychological game and partly a game of calculated risks. There will always be political and public criticism of any decision.

Mr. Raman's assessment is sober and rational. Kidnappings are  no-win situations for the government. Government officials and professional experts should be allowed to resolve them without too much outside interference.

The most effective way of debilitating the Maoists is to financially starve them by identifying the routes of money flow.Evangelists and Maoists are two sides of the same coin.In a recent statement on foreign funding of NGOs,an organisation like World Vision alone is getting almost 200 crores.A large chunk of this money which comes to various evangelical organisations, gets diverted to Maoists for their luxurious living and more importantly for buying of weapons.Mr Chidambaram should take effective steps to cut off all money supply to the Maoists, which alone can break their back. The concrete example of Nepal is very much there, where only now it is realised that Maoists and Evangelists were working in tandem.

That the brave, young Collector should come out of this ordeal unharmed is a given. When the negotiations take place, in the manner the government considers appropriate, these must be held in good faith. Seeming to negotiate while preparing for a rescue mission may not only cost the hostage his life, it would muddy the waters for similar situations in future. This is where the presence of someone like Swami Agnivesh, trusted by both sides, becomes important.
