Despite Agni V, we need to shore up our conventional capability to deter a surprise Chinese strike across the Himalayas to occupy areas--particularly in Arunachal Pradesh

Mr. Raman's article is well-reasoned. India's achievements in the strategic arena are commendable. However, they cannot by themselves nuetralize China's might. China has since 1962 taken  a good many steps in the border regions to pose a permanent and formidable threat to India. India's strategic armaments cannot counter that threat. As Raman proposes, India should vastly strengthen its tactical defences in the Himalyan border that can be used not only to defend against China's initiatives but also to effectively mount offensives against China's border forces when required.

There is one thing more that needs be done by way of strategic policy. That is undoing or neutralizing what China has been doing in the past decades by way of fraternizing india's neighboring countries like Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. India has had a long history with these nations and there should be no reason for them to fear India. India should take a number of measures in a variety of fields to strengthen its relations with these countries and demonstrate that it is fully respectful of their territories and ways of life. It should show their readiness to participate in their economic development. In the case of Pakistan it will be more difficult but not impossible. It takes leadership and initiative on the part of India to offer cooperation in economic and other sectors. The recent initiatives by way of free trade between the two countries are encouraging in this regard. Summarizing, India should be able to demonstrate that it is a more friendly and reliable neighbor than China.

‘Leadership or technology doesn’t know gender '

but scientist Tessy Thomas made news for heading the team responsible for India's first missile that can cross continents. With a range of over 5,000 kilometres, the multi-functional Agni V can be used to direct weapons over vast distances - or even launch a 300-kg satellite in a low earth orbit. Thomas, often termed India's 'agni-putri', spoke with Pallava Bagla about her feelings at Agni V's launch, what the weapon gives India - and why being a woman has never deterred her from succeeding in a male-dominated work field: ''

India needs many Tessi Thomas in every walk of life .

Unfortunately we have only one Tessi Thomasa few more like her but we are cursed with a battery of corrupt Lady Politicians like Rabri,Maya,Sheila Dixit,  etc.etc

I think pre-empting a Chinese surprise strike that too with the help of our Tibetan friends is a big dream that can never be true.

The only fear of China at present is that by hitting at India they can get a bleeding nose and the prestige might be lost forever. That would also mean end of Communist leadership. And it may also mean, their "value addition business" coming to an end.
Now the wars run on economics. Chinese economy is largely dependent on "value addition" and then exporting them. So, it is dependent on imports from western and south-eastern nations of semi-finished goods and then do some value addition with cheap labour helped by their dictatorship.

If they fail in a war with India, it means end of many for China all of its political, economic as well international standing.

We should concentrate on this weakness of China and we should be able to strike very hard with high-technology weapons. We can never equal Chinese in numbers, in a conventional war but we can take the fight to the next level with high-tech weapons in a conventional war. Just to achieve this objective we need the best artillery and fighter planes. We need better infrastructure and supply chain system. Chinese supply chain have to be sourced not from Tibet but from main land which is faraway. This is their weak point. We should have the requisite capability to cut off this supply chain system of Chinese.

We shall never use Agni V type of weapons. And we shall pray to God that such a necessity should never come to us. Agni types can be used only to destroy cities. Agni V is there only to deter the Chinese from attacking cities like Hyderabad (deep south )etc., but not useful for a real war, a conventional war. May be only Prithvi missile can be used to strike military targets in a war zone because of its 25km range and because soldiers in the battle field can change its nose as and when required.

The roads and other infrastructure on the border with China are not yet ready. In other words we are not yet ready to face Chinese surprise attack. In a war you would be always alone. India should never expect anyone's help. In fact Pakistan would attack, synchronizing with China's surprise.

The realty of a Chinese attack is very much real there is no doubt it. We can expect it within a 3 year period.

I feel so sad to read this hawkish article and even hawkish comments here. As a Chinese(yes, I mean PRC), I could constantly sense the desire of Chinese youth to get more understanding with giant south neighbor-India. In several biggest chinese travel forum including qyer.com/doyouhike.net, Travel to india is always the dream for many chinese backpackers. If one count Chinese airlines which operates flights between india and china, you will easily find out all 4 biggest chinese airlines have routines to India including Delhi,Mumbai,Bangalore,Kolkota while india side, only Air India has flight to Shanghai(excluding HK as scope of discussion of coz).

The imbalance between civilian communication negatively impact two nations' future development. I mean, now, if some one put pictures of River Gange(maybe with corpes) in one of China's biggest online forum, Tianya.com, I assume there will be a lot of Chinese thumbing down for this post. but pity, I could not find any relevant clue here or other places in India.

I trully believe both government are not doing so well to ease misunderstanding between our two nations, but most importantly, people power, has not shine in this case.
