The Tai of Fizzle (Apr 30) was interesting. Pratibha Patil was Sonia’s nominee for the post, when she was at the height of her political influence. She wanted a dud as the PM, and another dud as the president. And she got them both!
Vinod Kumar, Delhi
It has been an insult to the post of the president to have such a colourless non-entity, self-seeking and surrounded by the whiff of corruption.
Ali, Panchkula
It might be that the supreme commander of the armed forces intervened to get army land for her home in Pune. Of course, thanks to the stink raised by the media, she had the good grace to relinquish it.
Haridasan M., Mumbai
Why did Outlook waste so much ink on the president? Which president has left a ‘lasting impression’ in office? Even Kalam, though he bagged the moniker of ‘people’s president’, actually did little.
A.M., Bangalore
Patil is easily the most useless president ever. What grates even more is that even after she goes, taxpayers will continue to pay for her and her venal family. It’s high time that post-retirement benefits for people holding high office was done away with. They deserve their pension, nothing more.
S. Iyengar, Baroda
As Rajasthan governor, Pratibha Patil sent back, not once but thrice, the anti-conversion bill passed by the assembly, only to please Mrs G. The reward was the presidentship.
S.S. Nagaraj, Bangalore
On the positive side, Pratibha Patil was at least better than V.V. Giri or Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. That’s the best one can say about her.
Ganesan, New Jersey
Seriously, is there no worthy politician in this country who can stop this self-serving Congress government from its various misdeeds—like nominating its lackeys for high posts like the president?
Srikanth Chakravathy, Visakhapatnam
I want to suggest Nirmal Baba’s name for the coveted post. His ‘third eye’ will also help eliminate the economic hardships the country faces.
Pramod Srivastava, Delhi

Seriously, is there no worthy politician in this country who can stop this damn Congress govt from its misdeeds like nominating such stupid people for high posts as the President of India!!? It is really annoying to read such news in papers daily. When the past of such people is known openly, why is it that they are getting selected, other than to disgrace our country!!?
God! just wondering when this Congress goes out of power and all thse fu*king Congress people and their friends like this lady Patil perish.
Goodbye Lady !
"Pratibha Patil leaves no lasting impression on her office"
On the positive side, she was better than VV Giri or Fakruddin Ali Ahmed. That is the best one can say about her.
Dear Sir:
The new national motto for the entire political class should be ' SELF BEFORE SERVICE'!
One wonders when such blatant misuse of power and utter shameless loot of the country's resources is going to stop?
But then who's going to stop them - when the guardians and sentinels themselves are compromised?
Pratibha Patil lacked charisma and she won't leave any legacy except for being the first woman president of the country. But what can we expect out of a titular head of the government. There aren't many presidents who have done a yeoman job as the president. In terms of the worst president, I see she hasn't taken any overtly dastardly decision. Whatever her personal convictions and personal beliefs are, India has seen worse president also. Zial Singh almost brought down Rajiv Gandhi's government and President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed signed the emergency orders without even bothering to understand what it meant.
@ Anwaar
If it were India that he was President of,the former Israeli Pres. would have got away scot free.
Here our Presidents enjoy immunity from legal action, civil or criminal. And we also have protocol that is held high & intervenes should such a situation arise ..... The President is the one who swears in The Chief justice of India. The only window for prosecution would be when the person is still a candidate.Even President-Elects can't be touched.

She has left a Rs 250 crore travel bill on the tax payer. She is the nation's misfortune as the first citizen.

She was Sonia's nominee, when she ( Sonia ) was super woman of Congress. She wanted a dud as the PM and another dud as the President, and she did it. Both will be remembered as duds.
“We do not have any right to criticize insignificant tenure of Pratibha Patil, because you cannot expect a ‘BANG’ from the Gun who’s cartridges are kept by someone else in His (or her?) possession.”
There is just one word to describe Pratibha Patil's presidency - mediocre. It has been an insult to the country and to the post of president to have had such a colourless nonentity, self-seeking and surrounded by the whiff of corrruption, in this exalted post. If this is what it is like to have a woman president, then let's hope that she is the first and the last.
Unless you have skeletals in your cuppboards, after you become President of India, you have nothing to fear and can carry out duties of President "without fear or fear" and protect the constitution. With the background of Pratibha Patil, including having been a Table Tennis player at state level if I my memory is recalling correctly, as the first woman President of our Soverign, Democratic, Socialistic Republic of India, I had expected some sterling performance from her. Yes, except for Anna Hazare movement, we saw nothing really happening that challenged her role. But is it true? With so many scams surfacing, maoism not decreasing to an extent that it gets hardly any media attention, and then the various controversies listed out in the article, I feel let down. I do not recall having heard her speaches on the eve of Repunlic Day. I am putting a name in the arena for selection of candidates for the next President of India. He, I am sure will uphold the constitution, perform his duties without "fear or favour". He does not have a political background but understands politics. He is sharp in picking up unfamiliar subjects. He is vocal in even the face of adverse conditions. He is intelligent. He is a Gandhi - the name is Shailesh Gandhi, presently a Central Information Commisioner.
Which President did? Why is outlook wasting so much paper on the President? I know the silly (summer) season is upon us but did the sex surverys get delayed or something :-).
Even APJ, I know he earned the moniker of the People's President - what did he actually do as a legacy as a President. I can't recall anything but I will be happy to be educated. It is just the nature of the position - there is no upside to deliver - all you can do is nothing or negative.
She is the most disgraced president of India.
A constitutional president is not supposed to make waves or create precedents. We are better off than Israel where the president had to resign because of sexual molestation charges, or Austria where the president was dogged with revelations of his Nazi past.
Lets call a spade a spade : Pratibhas choice for President was SOLELY on the fact that she is a woman, and in a blindly gender-casteist society as ours, women get preferred.
Her sole and, in fact mandatory, qualification for the post of president was:
Her TOTAL servility to the family.
That is the only criterion that matters for the family. Just look at their present and past record. They want to fill the country with their servants.
boya ped babool ka, aam kahan se khay.
As the Vishwabandhu Gupta (the famous cloud computing guy ) put it; "arai use to chhodo, wo to paranthe waranthe banati thee Indira Gandhi ke".
When there was that genuine demand for second term of Dr Kalam. Our great VM's can't-do-wrong lady decided to reward the pet. And of course Siv-Sena's "mi maratha manus".
Did anyone expected any good from Pratibha Patil?
" ...... her selection itself is a comment on our political class" says Ramchandra Guha. What they say in English, "bad habits die hard". No Hindi one is better, "Kutte ki poonch kabhi seedhi nahi hoti".
That is with the Guha and likes (including VM). When it is comes to queen, everyone has to share the blame.
No sir, it is not a "comment on our political class"; it is a comment on Congress Party, period.
Pratibha Devising Patil`s only great contribution as a president of India is she made name of her husband immortal by constantly hammering his name after her name in media
Prtibha Devising Patil made immortal her husband`s name in media constantly hammering
Is there a poorer example of first family in a democratic country?
Easily the most pointless President ever! Even a mute, handicapped monkey in the Rashtrapati Bhavan could have done a better job.
What grates me more is that even after she goes, taxpayers will continue to pay for this idiot and her venal family. Its high-time that post-retirement "benefits" for people holding high-office is just done away with. All they deserve is their sarkari pension, like everyone else and not a paisa more.
Nagaraj instead of what you made out,you should have spoken of her role iin a Cooperative scam were her husband as one of Directors sanctioned loans violating RBI norms caused small time investors in the bank to loose life time savings when the Bank went bankrupt.
Yes her decisions would have been Politically motivated given her elevation as First citizen of India.
Its time we India debate issues like Corruption and Economy and not just Ideology
Pratibha Patil sent back, not once but three times, anti-conversion bill passed by Rajasthan assembly only to please Sonia Gandhi. The latter was mightily pleased to make an undeserving Pratibha Patil as the president. One should not be surprised if a Catholic like Margaret Alva, is chosen this time to push the Pope's agenda faster.
