Clarification

In our story, Who Should be Next President? (Mar 12), a line reads “The Tatas had a Facebook  page devoted to the cause...” The Tatas did not, there was a Facebook devoted to the cause of Ratan Tata for next president. The error is regretted.

The Rubber Stamp of India

When our country has a puppet as a prime minister, who else can you expect to be the president but a rubber stamp (Who Should Be Next President?, Mar 12)? All we wish for is a person untainted by corruption and without any linkages to any political dynasty.

Sumirti S., Salem

The long list of options for the next president surprises me. Is it that difficult to choose the right citizen, who is well-versed in the judiciary and legislature branches, and is capable of executing his/her powers in the best interests of the rest of the countrymen?

Praveen Thimmaiah, Bangalore

The best shoe polisher of the Nehru-Gandhi clan will be the next president, period.

Kautilya, Washington

Why is no one thinking of Dr Farooq Abdullah? A Kashmiri at that post would have a soothing effect on the turbulent Kashmir politics. Besides, he is an eminently suitable candidate in all respects.

Samirajan, Portland, US

If the choice of last president Pratibha Patil is any indication, none of these will be the likely nominee.

Pramod K., Phoenix

Why not Dr APJ again? I think he is the best person to inhabit the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Shyam, Allahabad

The qualifications necessary for an Indian president today: rubber stamp-like, obedient, sycophantic and silent.

Bhagat Singh, Atlantis

J.M. Lyngdoh would make an excellent president, given his impeccable track record so far. However, his intellect, integrity and impartiality will probably come in the way.

D.L. Narayan, Visakhapatnam

Why not a non-BJP, non-Congress person like Deve Gowda?

Achutha Bhat, Bangalore

Abu Abraham’s cartoon in Indian Express on Dec 10, 1975

Remember Abu Abraham’s cartoon in Indian Express (reprinted below) showing Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed signing the Emergency declaration from his bathtub? That’s what the Congress wants.

S.S. Nagaraj, Bangalore

Why scamper around looking for the right (or any) candidate? When the time comes, the ruling coalition will spring a surprise, a la Pratibha Patil.

Sunil Kumar, Delhi

What about Diggy Raja? He has made his case by showing his willingness to take the blame for all of the Congress’s shortcomings. He might be bad for the country, but for the Congress there’s no better candidate than him.

Maha, New Jersey

I think Manmohan will be the best candidate for president. Apart from a change of residence, he won’t find the job description any different.

Ganesan, New Jersey

Not that it matters, I’ll vote for whoever is willing to cut down the expenses of maintaining a president and reduces the number of governors to between 4-6, one for each region.

Arun Maheshwari, Bangalore

Why can’t we tweak our Constitution and elect a president like the French do? Our head of state does not even have the responsibilities borne by the French president.

Ganesa Dilip, chennai

If we can consider Amitabh Bachchan, why not Saif Ali Khan? And Kareena Kapoor as first lady! Just imagine, we could settle international disputes with a headbutt.

Ramki, Delhi

Ultimately, we’ll have the perfect rubber stamp. This is what all the parties want—except each wants the stamp for itself.

Joshua Miranda, Chennai

It is worth wondering why ex-cji M.N. Venkatachaliah didn’t find a spot amongst the distinguished on this list. His lordship’s capability and competence has been tested time and again and duly acknowledged.

Amarendra Bajpai, Lucknow

Meira Kumar isn’t a bad choice. Visiting heads of state will no doubt be charmed by her aap baithiye na! And why Amartya Sen? There is no famine on the horizon. Why waste talent? Manmohan hears/sees/ knows nothing and will therefore do nothing. He’s out. As is Pranab da. The accent just won’t cut it. E. Sreedharan? Diehard metroman that he is, he’ll build a station inside Rashtrapati Bhavan and spoil those elegant roses.

Manish Banerjee, Calcutta

When he was Kerala chief minister, A.K. Antony was asked why he never had bodyguards. “The people are my bodyguards,” was his reply. A leader of such broad outlook merits the post instead of the showmen.

K.N. Narayana Pillai, Chennai

As PM, Manmohan Singh has proven his loyalty to the only president that matters. He has also mastered the art of maintaining stoic silence and unfailingly signing on the dotted line.

Gopal Ashrit, Bangalore

It is unfortunate that Dr Karan Singh’s name does not feature here. Considering his political and cultural contributions, the two criteria of examination, and his range of vision for promoting India, is there a better fit for the prez’s seat than he?

Radhanath Pradhan, Orissa

Let me throw Vinod Mehta’s name on the table. As Outlook editor, he founded and presided over what would become the Sonia Gandhi Vyavasthapaka Bhajan Mandali and the Rahul Gandhi Vyavasthapaka Bhashan Samiti in all but name.

Let me suggest the name of Vinod Mehta for the next President of India. As the now retired Editor of Outlook, he founded and presided over what became the Sonia Gandhi Vyavasthapaka Bhajan Mandali and the Rahul Gandhi Vyavasthapaka Bhashan Samiti in all but name. Traditionally, the President was considered a rubber stamp in the Prime Minister's hands, but in recent years, Manmohan Singh has been a perfect rubber stamp in his leaders' hands. The combination of Manmohan Singh and Vinod Mehta would make the Gandhis' control over India absolute. Old Gandhi family sycophant and Vinod Mehta buddy Khushwant Singh could also be hired to put a case forward for the ultimate party and Gandhi family loud-hailer in the media to be elevated to the Rashtrapathi Bhavan. Jai Ho!

Off all the persons under review by the Author, I consider Mr. JM Lyngdoh as the best qualified. His work and experience as a civil servant and subsequently CEC was extraordinary. A simple, honest and impartial person with knowledge of Public Good and so should prove as worthy as Dr APJ as President.

But I know that I am hoping against hope - it is going to be a pliable person like Dr MMS or Dr Ansari with outside chance for Pranabda! These things do not change unless the educated lot take more proactive role in general affairs of the Nation as envisioned by Plato in 'The REpublic'. Till then, it is 'Mera Bharat Mahan' whether it is Congress(I)/BJP or any other political class.

Neelabh Mishra - The resident spokesperson of the oppressed, depressed in Outlook who uses every opportunity to establish his sanctimonious point of view. He beats all readers with his unique style of - Either I am Right Or you are wrong !

Imagine Saif Ali Khan as president and Kareena Kapoor as first lady. Ah, that will truly make even those who still think India as a place of elephant and monkeys to revise their ideas.

And just to elaborate, our  President Saif Ali Khan could settle international disputes through a simple scuffle, leaving the heads of states of our rival nations bloody nosed. And that , of all sounds so wonderful !!!

If you see the list of people who occupied the Rashtrapathi Bhavan since 1952, every one of them - I mean every one of them , except one gentleman had spent his/her life being supporter of the Nehru Gandhi Dynasty and every one of them has/had been a politician.

The one and only exception was Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who is the best president we had.

Why cannot we tweak our constitution, and elect a president. Why can we have our own style of presidential government similar to the lines of fifth french republic. Why is the country state of head does not have any power. Why do not we elect a leader rather than electing a party. The head of the state does not even have any responsibility, just eating tax payers money.

Just a loud thought, could be naive, but i feel it is time to elect leaders than partys.

Hamid Answari : Good choice. The Communist Party of India ( Maxists) can then rent out their own premises & set up office at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The rental proceeds can be useded for holidaying of Politbureau members.

Miera Kumar : Not a bad choice either. Visiting Head of States will be charmed when she would say aap baithye na !

Gopal Krishna Gandhi : Non starter. Have sense , even sense of humor . On top of that read too many books.

Narayan Murthy : Good. Can start a labour contract business all over again on those sprawiling compounds.

Azim Premji : Not bad candidate. But Narendra modi will not aprove.

Mahasweta Devi: Not a bad chhoice either. Naxals will desert Chattisgarh & will have run of the state. Never mind Chidambaram would be scandalised.

Fali S. Nariman: If dhansaag is in the menu in State banquates , nobody will lobby for invites.

Amartya Sen : There is no famine in the horizon . Why waste talent?

E. Sreedharan : No way. Incurable metro builder.   Will build a Metro station right inside Rashtrapati Bhavan . Tom , Dick or Harry get down & will spoil those elegant roses.

Ratan Tata : Wiil be digusted at the misuse of land at Rashtrapati Bhavan. May statrt a plant right there to cover trucks with sheet metal & call them SUVs.

Manmohan Singh : Not a bad choice. Will hear nothing, know nothing , see nothing & therefore do nothing.

Pranab Mukherjee : Out of question . Accent not good!

".....these people will be out of their depth in the office. It may be a ceremonial office but it’s also a constitutional office.” ..Kumar Ketkar

This esteemed gentleman, a veteran journalist who sounds more like the spokesperson of a political party, is surely not oblivious that "being out of depth" is not a bar to holding any political position in India. In fact, that is a highly desirable quality, considering that the powers that be would want a "rubber stamp" in that exalted office.

I am sure that political appointees to the Presidency like the present incumbent and many others were totally out of depth in that exalted post while, on the other hand, we have the example of Dr. Kalam, a non-political appointee, who was one of our best presidents. It might be a largely ceremonial office, but it becomes crucial when there is a constitutional crisis like a hung parliament, for example.

I personally think that J.M.Lyngdoh would make an excellent president, given his impeccable track record so far. However, his intellect, integrity and impartiality will probably rule out his candidature.

The Way State elections are turning against Congress/UPA, it appears that for first time in History of India, the opposition has a real chance to defeat a Congress/Nehru dynasty sponsored candidate for Office of President.

As someone said, Najma or Sreedharan or Narayana Murthy should be supported by NDA and other opposition parties (including SP) to preempt Congress from putting a dynasty backing spineless bootliker for the post.

SP , TMC and AIADMK are key players in this poll for sure .

Actually, I think it's a distinct possibility. If Rahul has to be projected as the candidate, and not be seen as stepping on the throat of MMS to climb to the throne, MMS can either "voluntarily" retire, or be kicked upstairs.

However, I feel that the most suitable candidate is Meira. When she receives any guests, all she has to do is say "Baith jaiye", of which she has lots of practice.

Of course, she might also say "Shaant ho jaiye" out of habit, which might confuse the crowd.

Some one may ask, what are the QRs (qualifying requirements) for any one to become the President of India. The answer must lie in the Constitution Of India.   But it is not true. it depends on whims and fancies of those who matter. Do we not recollect how an official candidate was defeated. Do we not know what an MP from Rajasthan recently said about what were the QRs. I recollect how in our childhood and later youth we used to listen to the Presidential address on 25 Jan. It carried on for the first three Presidents but after the President volunteered to sweep the streets it just vanished.  Why only Presidents even the Governors were looked up to with lot of respect. The worry is that the vote-bank should not consolidate to the main opposition.

/// Nehru Gandhi Dynasty and every one of them has/had been a politician.

The one and only exception was Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who is the best president we had.///

Add one more name to this list. Dr Rajendra Prasad (Sardar Patel Group) defeated Nehru's candidate Rajgopalachari in the first ever presidential election (india) and fought and win for second term against Nehru's will. Without MKG's support Nehru was as good as a state leader. You may say even MKGandhi liked and promoted sycophants. What we   read  today is a rotten history of kangres.

I would support  Mr Hamid Ansari's candidature. He is from the largest  minority community of India, has experience as the Vice-President,  is an educated, cultured, a non-controversial and affable gentleman. Let the Hindus be large-hearted and consent to Hamid Ansari saheb becoming  the next President of India . That would raise our stock among the comity of nations the world over.

E.Sreedharan and perhaps his school classmate T.N. Seshan (after all he ran as a congress candidate in 1996 LS POLLS) could be considered as consensus candidates

So?

He is a nice person, eminently suited for the post. But, religion is no criteria for his eligibility.

'Hamid Ansari saheb becoming the next President of India . That would raise our stock among the comity of nations the world over.'
G. Niranjan Rao

Congress is not in position to impose its choice.Otherwise too Hamid Ansari did favor Congress when he declared session over at 12 night sharp during the discussions of Lok Pal Bill .There was no such time limitations and Rajya Sabha could continued to discuss when the opposition members wanted to extend the time limit. But he did not inspite loud protests by the Opposition .Now the opposition Parties do remember this.

And how the Nation's prestige will rise if Ansari is made Prez ? Since you want Religion the basis then why not any Christian ,Budhist,Jain and other minorities member be Prez. ??

We had already three Muslim Prez in the past. Why not some other Minority Member this time ??

Per practice since Congress nominated Madam Patil as Prez so the Vice Prez should be a nominee of the opposition's choice . Under Congress trampled over this demand and unilaterally nominated Ansari sahib as VC.

What does Hamid Ansari have that  Zakir Hussain, Fakruddin Ali and Abdul Kalam did not have?

G Niranjan Rao >> Let the Hindus be large-hearted and consent to Hamid Ansari saheb becoming the next President of India . That would raise our stock among the comity of nations the world over.

I am ok with this idea, provided the people of Jammu and Kashmir are large hearted and allow a Hindu to be their Chief Minister for next 5 years. Or maybe we should ask the people of Nagaland and Mizoram to be largehearted and allow a non Christian to be their Chief Minister for a 5 year tenure.

Large Heartedness is not a one way street. Hindu Right brought Mr Kalam as Prez in 2002 and it was the Anti Hindu Left which opposed him bitterly. And everyone knows how the Hindu Hating Left Libtards used every opportunity to abuse and insult the greatest President of india, Shri Abdul Kalam.

BTW, why dont you consider Azim Premji in your list? He is also a non Hindu but not a Gandhi dynasty bootliker and a lazy communist troll like Ansari. And Azim Premji is someone who earnt his bread, unlike the likes of Ansari who are predatory feudal lords belonging to a generation that built a myth on Nehruvian values to fool a billion people on a failed idea.

I would rather prefer a Pranad Mukherjee rather than a Hamid Ansari. The former may not be a cleanest person but he atleast does not pretend his connections with India's biggest industrial house. But the latter is a predatory feudal who fools the country and lives in a bygone erao . He will be another Prathiba Patil who will work behind the screens to make a UPA 3 regime post 2014.

As Manish Banerjee says, Hamid Ansari as Prez will make Rashtrapathi bhavan an extended arm of JNU, 10 Janpath and CPM's headquarters in Delhi. And Pranab will make Rashtrapathi Bhavan a guest house of India's biggest industrial house. Which one is better? Ask the people of West bengal, who rejected 35 years of Leftist Misrule !!

We want anyone to be President, but he/she should be really a president, the head of the state, and not a rubber stamp, as we usually find Indian presidents to be. If we need a rubber stamp as the head of the state, why not use one, i.e. a rubber stamp or a robot, if we want the head to have a head too, albeit artificial or technical. Why we shell out so much salary, to pay to the president, if he has not any onus, other than dancing to the tunes of the ruling party, and reading the 'already written' speeches! At this juncture, when 65 years have passed since we atttained Independence, the president should also be FREE!!!

I am satisfied to behold/see atleast one writer here i.e. Mahasweta Devi in the list of the prospective presidents, and while I wish and want Mahasweta Devi, whose Hazar Chaurasi Ki Maa exposes much of what remains hidden under the files somewhere, is a masterpiece, I FEAR and am really concerned about if that Dr. Manmohan Singh becoming next President. A 'Manmohan' who can play the role of 'rubber stamp' while being the PM of the country, will not hesitate to dance to the tunes of his she-boss Sonia Gandhi, and for Sonia and Co., I am sure, Manmohan is the RIGHT CHOICE, and with his becoming the next 'rubber stamp' i.e. the president, the congress president will have freedom to 'make' her son Rahul Gandhi, the next PM!

Again, on this OUTLOOK platform, today, I foretell Dr Manmohan Singh will be our next President!!! will you bet?
