Prof. Mandelbaum of John Hopkins University has aptly described USA as a "cash strapped super power". As prof. Choamsky describes a list of objectivesthat USA, with its sidekicks in Europe, would like to accomplish is long but itscapacity to achieve is getting constricted. It doesn't have the money. There is red ink in US finances as far as eye can see. If the relation with China gets tense and the financingof deficit becomes difficult there will be strong resistence from Americans against military misadventures. Frankly, although a big power, it hasn't achieved desirable objectives in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan after 25 years of war making against the primitive, militarily weak societies with the strong will to resist the aggression. Continuing to follow the same policy and expecting different results is a lunacy that prof Choamsky has done well to warn against.
A very thought-provoking op-ed on why China's political model is superior to America's democracy.
www.nytimes.com/2012/02/16/opinion/why-chinas-political-model-is-superior.html
Folks - Prof. Chomsky is a leftist - I don't think he even hides it - so that revealation by folks in their comments is hardly rocket science. Within the American political spectrum he would have been labelled communist for sure in an earlier time. I guess now a days communists aren't the worry (they are viewed as marginalized and toothless to bother with) - Islamists have replaced them. Inspite of his support for the Palestine cause and apportioning of larger blame on Israel and US for the lack or even chance of resolution, it would be silly to try and label him as a closet Islamist and hence no one even attempts.
Of course, his focus is the corrosive nature of American power. Fortunately for us Indians, for whatever reason - distance, size, Nehru the leftist but true democrat, other bigger fish to fry for the Americans, we have been spared the corrosion of that immense power. Whereas, just a short distance away, Pakistan was not so fortunate - of couse they can't just blame it all on America as they try to do - since they willingly became a client state for the goodies in return. For us by and large American power has been benign to beneficial except may be the one instance of the 5th Fleet. My view is going forward of all the choices facing us - American power will remain between benign and beneficial for us.
Of course American self image is of a responsible power for the greater good of humankind - having done great good for many and if at all very little harm to a few - of course doing much better than any other power in history, including European colonialists. There is some truth to this self image. But it is always good to have a counter point. It provides much needed balance because the truth is usually somewhere in the middle. Those affected by the corrosion of that power of course don't have a voice that can be heard. It is another matter that may be the number of people who really listen to Chomsky are so few and far in between, especially in America itself that may be the counter points remain just that - counter points, rather than influence anything for better balance.
Noam Chomsy is most probably a leopard in a sheep's skin by which I mean he most probably is a closet communist. So his conclusions need not be taken seriously. But his research & writings is of immence value to those who take capitalist economy based democracy seriously. Nobody has exposed subversion of basic principles of democracy by nepotism based neo-liberal economic wheeler dealres of the political industrial complex like Chomsky did.
Nothing in todays political stage in reality is what their publicly stated objective fed to the peoploe via pliant media. Chomsy helps one to understand how this nexus works & to the extent possible to correct these abberations.
Though not in a spectacular fashion , Chomsy in his small way must have reined in runaway poltical cronysm by raising our understanding of the extreneous influences which decides most important political descisions of our times.

Whether so called 'cold fusion' which claim to generate surplus energy by addition & concentration of nuetrons ( as against release of neutrons in conventional nuclear reaction ) is at all a physical phenomenon is being holtly contested in scientific circles .
It is phantacy of overheated imagination to claim that most problems will 'sort themselves out in very short space of time' with the help of 'cold fusion'. Even if cold fusion prove to be accepted physical phenomenon ( all nuclear reactions conforms to classical Newtonian physics such conservation of energy , so called cold fusion doesn't) , its bazar gossip to suggest cold fusion will sort out world's all political & economic problems .

Noam Chomsky, has got all his facts wrong. USA never helped Pakistan to develop Nuclear technology. This is how it happend: AQ Khan was working in the Europe, and the Head went on holidays; AQ KHAN copied all the drawings; then Bhutto gave him everything he asked for, and he started developing Nuclear Technology. Stolen technology from the West, trait of China and Pakistan.
Because the technology was stolen from Europe; and proved to be one of the best; China became a partner to it. It introduced North Korea for the Missile Technology.
Fusion Technology will get the Oil producing countries of the Middle East into oblivision, and they will revert back to 18th Century, and the World will live in peace thereafter.
Two things are apparent from this article: This paper has been published just add "One More" of the dubious publications of Noam Chomsky; If Dr. Swami and Noam Chomsky are patrons of Harvard, then it is not worthing studying at Harvard; these people are "Problem Creators" and not "Problem Solvers" as they should be ethically!
Regarding environments, he does not understand this concept either. Nature has its own ways of "Balancing-Acts" in the form of earthquakes and tsunamis, etc. etc. World will carry on as usual despite this environmental issues.
India did not get any support from USA for its nuclear programme. It is an absurd statement as much as stating that India had either stolen or given help to develop its guided missiles (not by this author).
For example the guided missile requires an on board computer but the "nose" where it could be placed has to endure very high temperatures.. USA gave price quotation to supply the nose, which would equal to developing at least 10 missiles which can then be thrown into sea (failing experiment) and develop the 11th one! And that too without the high processing chip (CPU) for the on board computer. When finally Misradhatu Nigam and other engineers including Abdul Kalam developed the "nose" with an alloy metal, it was that much cheap.
USA has been very clever. Pakistan got all its missiles and also nuclear bomb technology from China. These missiles were simply re-painted with funny names like Ghori, Ghazani ,Shaheen etc., just green paint and some while letters are enough for Pakistan , there is no need for a technology to develop the nose.

You are 100% correct about Fusion technology. It would change the whole scenario for an atom bomb. In fusion technology, where fusion of atom would release the bonding energy in a chain reaction, the bomb can be limited in it’s impact limited to a smallest area which is nearly impossible for the present fission technology atom bombs. So, it would bring a paradigm change.
As usual, Noam Chomsky keeps his anti-establishment ideology.
USA never helped India to acquire nuclear weapons! Where did he get this idea, I fail to understand?
Having been a professor, he does not understand the "basics": Logic is the key and is a great thing! His arguments in the scribe defy logic.
Whatever the "Imperial" powers are doing, is based on sound logic, and on a long term "Vision" of the World, which Noam Chomsky lacks.
World is waiting for the "Cold Fusion" experiment to succeed; and once it becomes a reality over a period of time, most of the problems will sort themselves out in a very short space of time.
USA is one country, that will never go down and will remain and deserve to be a SuperPower for a very long long time.
Superrr piece, as always.....
>> " the Pentagon and the intelligence services.... report that Iran does not pose a military threat."
The hype is at Israel's insistence.
>> "the primary threat to the U.S. and Israel is that Iran might deter their free exercise of violence. A further threat is that the Iranians clearly seek to extend their influence to neighboring Iraq and Afghanistan, and beyond as well. Those “illegitimate” acts are called “destabilizing” (or worse). In contrast, forceful imposition of U.S. influence halfway around the world contributes to “stability” and order."
An excellent assessment in a nutshell!
>> " the U.S. supports democracy if, and only if, the outcomes accord with its strategic and economic objectives."
This may sound ironical, but it has been proven to be true again and again.
>> " for 35 years the U.S. has led the rejectionist camp on Israel-Palestine, blocking an international consensus calling for a political settlement in terms too well known to require repetition."
The U.S. has been a brazen obstruction to a settlement, while it pretends to be a peace broker.
>> " precondition is that Israel must be free to expand its illegal settlements in the West Bank."
Verbally the U.S. opposes such settlements, but in reality it encourages them.
