Apropos Sudha Pai’s review of Arun Sinha’s book (The Man Who Trashed Mai-Baap Sarkar, Jan 16), the BJP supports Nitish Kumar because it has no one else to support. There’s a saying that politicians will turn patriotic if it serves their purpose. The BJP can’t form a government on its own in Bihar; it can’t support the Congress or Laloo’s RJD; so it had to go with Nitish and the good he is doing.

There’s some similarity between the “social engineering” formulas of Mayawati and Nitish Kumar. Mayawati neatly upended the Congress formula of Brahmins supported by Dalits and Muslims: for her, it is Dalits supported by Brahmins and others. Nitish has gathered extreme backwards, Mahadalits, Pasmanda Muslims and Kurmis backed by the upper castes who are with his alliance partner, BJP. But where Nitish scores is in ending corruption (to a great extent) and in good governance.

This actually reflects two of our limitations - the limitation of our judiciary to impose punishment on those who do gross violation of constitutional norms to push their political agenda. Maybe MMS is not corrupt bribetaker but he is very much part of blatant abuse of constitution in 2005 and this was done such a way to even subvert prez advice and trap him. Shame.

The second limitation is our paid media, the way they refuse to debate gross violation of constitution when it is done by a particular party/dynasty/family and its representatives.

So Sad !!

As much as we must appreciate Nitesh Kumar and his enormous effort to turn around Bihar, we must also remember that he had a very responsible friend and ally with him - BJP.

In a way, the NDA itself began in 1994, when Nitish shed all inhibitions to join BJP (something that should have shocked hardline lohiates). He has stood with BJP thus so far, making this alliance one of longest political partnerships in India (only Akali BJP and SS BJP alliances are longer but unlike these two, JDU and BJP have different value systems).

Let us wish all the success for the continuation of Nitesh raj and maybe one Day Bihar will be the number one state of India.
