Eat Wave

Apropos Those Mean Papas, I’m not a fish eater, but the story and the pictures are very evocative. Wonderful stuff from N.S. Madhavan and Namboodiri. Thanks!

The piece de resistance of the issue! Or shall I say fish de resistance?

The line illustrations of Namboodiri and Madhavan’s lucid text were a culinary treat.

The article Those Mean Papas was a treat indeed. Nostalgic tastes of a variety of fresh catch cooked in a ‘chatti’ (mudpot) swept through my tastebuds in a matter of few minutes.

Siva Sankar, Kottayam

I read N.S. Madhavan’s mouthwatering piece like a novel, with Namboodiri’s drawings adding some extraordinary spice. Madhavan made a fleeting mention of Lord Muthappan, the presiding deity of Parasini temple in Kannur. Like Keralites, the Lord too enjoys fish and toddy. For Malabaris, no visit to their native place is complete without paying obeisance to the Lord.

Kudos to OUTLOOK for publishing the line
illustrations of Namboodiri. The simplicity in drawings
and the lucid style of the text not only relished the reader,
but it really was "a matter for meditation".A nice culinary
treat at year end.

Excellent piece of narration on Malayali’s ardor with fish. It took be back to my college day escapades where we, a group of foodies, made clandestine visits to nearby ‘Kallu Shaps’ (toddy parlor) in search of mouth watering variants of spicy fish dishes. Kudos! Madhavan.
