Apropos All You Who Make Love To Mannequins (Dec 26), why should anyone worry about people who make their own decisions, fully cognizant of the repercussions? We would like the definition of a “sexually-liberated” woman. Please do enlighten us, Meena Kandasamy.
Sangeetha, Chennai
Meena Kandasamy has a point. Sexual libertarianism may be just a sublimation of our baser instincts of voyeurism and exhibitionism. In spite of all our self-deceptions, we may not have advanced any further in our sexual behaviour than the preening and grooming of our ape cousins.
Anwaar, Dallas
I think it’s far safer to make love to mannequins than STD-ridden prostitutes.
Narendra, Hyderabad
Kandasamy’s contention that sex is “one of the ways in which men and women come to terms with their anger with the world” is just a little too reductionist and condescending. Just a little.
Zafar, Sydney
How and when did the Bhagavad Gita become a Brahminical hegemonic text?
Praveen, Chennai
Very interesting take on the other side of sex surveys. I agree with Meena Kandaswamy’s views on the Gita. No wonder in today’s India, we are seeing brothers killing brothers, sons abandoning their parents/grandparents over petty disputes of money.
B.P., on e-mail
I should say that Meena Kandasamy has indeed exercised a lot of moderation in this article as far as Brahminism is concerned. She is capable of much more.
Ramachandran, Chennai
Looks like we found a disciple for Saba Naqvi in outlook who can bring in her BJP bashing in anything and everything. This new kid in the block is known for her Hindu and Brahmin bashing.
Thou there's a difference, former does it with too much mid-east leanings and later planted directly by Vatican after a crash course in the UK
@Ram
I don't know how you Tam Brams put up with these people.
But, what exactly do we think will happen when we have our tax dollars fund their food subsidies, thei education, etc.
Whenever I see an article by Meena Kandasamy or Siriyavan Anand or their ilk, I read them knowing fully well what it will contain. They have become so boringly predictable, despite Meena Kandasamy's claims to be a poet!
Ram
Whenever I see an article by Meena Kandasamy
Sex is a natural in all human beings (to varying degrees).
Men & Women spend a lot of money on various goods.
The goods retailers need to attract their attention through their advertising.
Hence they use sex to draw attention.
We're in the age of 9% growth ... why blame the brahmins alone for it...
@@@"Which Indian will ever own up his culpability and the collective weight of our hoary history?"
The missionary zeal and their bribe takers are crossing all the limits. The above statement shows it. And the author of this article also shows it.
The culpability or the collective weight of guilt etc. belongs to invaders of India and not to Indians. The invaders of India finally settled in India and become themselves Indians. These so called “civilized” foreigners must be remembered for what they did in Goa just for an example.
Consider the slavery. You have to understand according to the existing time. Slaves in India had their rights, which was clear from Koutilya's Arthshastra which was written during the times of Alexander the Great. Slaves in Europe had no such rights. There was no tolerance for any difference of opinion. Comparatively in a modern period, Galileo was imprisoned.
Caste system is an iron frame even now. It was because of caste system , Hinduism survived. Look at Afghanistan; here Buddhist kings had all pervading influence. First Hindus became Buddhists throwing caste system in to dust bin. That was enough for Islam to convert all of them later on . There is nothing wrong with caste system per se. Only caste based discrimination is wrong and must be contained.
In a Utopian, idealistic, RamaRajya , caste system existed. There were Golden eras in India much, much before invaders came along with their "brother hood", "love" ,compassion, sex as a sinful act , no caste system but feudalism and lords !! , decree of divorce , small pox, syphilis, corruption, slave mentality, system of unending evidence system in courts, thousands of churches and masques and now the missionary aids and HIV+
Hinduism reformed itself, in spite of soul harvesters and swords . The reformation in Hinduism is a continuous process. The author finds faults with Bhagavad-Gita and caste system and says that their modern equals are commercial ads and multinational's business !!!. But whose "culture" are these ???
These ads ,size zero slim figures, cat walks, junk food stalls, lesbians, homosexuals, sexual perverts ,anal sex, child sex, divorces, single mothers, “open marriages", live-in-together, Viagra, pills and inferiority complex ??? Do this author associate them with Kamasutra, Bhagavad-Gita, Caste system, Brahmanism ( remember Brahmanism do not represent Hinduism, it is only part of it ) or upper caste arrogance and their “stamping” on lower classes ? The word “divorce” did not exist in Hindu India. One should better know that . There are many “Hindu “ Puranas and Puranic stories and even in Ramayana , you have Ahalya story , which was essentially an extra-marital relationship.
But the important point is "divorce" as a concept or as system of separation to facilitate re-marriage did not exist in Hinduism.
Corruption was sinful for Indians before the advent of British. British, to their credit, also brought diseases like small pox , Syphilis and also tobacco or the habit of smoking to India. Corruption was made highly fashionable and another class called “babus ” started, and sex was made as most sinful act to do !!
So, the collective guilt of this nation belongs to whom?
"Which Indian will ever own up his culpability and the collective weight of our hoary history?"
World history is much worse than Indian history. It is not hoary but gory as well.
One of my friend an Indian was working in a university here for a PhD. They were a threesome , one Indian , One Pakistani and one Bulgarian. The Pakistani while conversing about partition about the Indian said that millions of people died during partition. The Bulgarian whi overheard them told them it is 50 million who died during WW11. 5 times more than who died during Partition of India. Later on I had a chance to meet all three. The Bulgarian student revealed the gory and hoary history of Europe and Russia.
In India we are not taught world history and one feels that world history should also be taught as an alernate subject, so that one can pass a unbiased statement on the intensity of hoary and goryness.
There is an excellent web site of Prof David Kertzer which was posted in a web site.
http://davidkertzer.com/
There are many books listed there. This was all from the archives in 1998 from RCC . Just click on Pope and the Jews in the web site and reveals all the truth which led to the holocaust. The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, a Jewish boy by RCC reveals how secularism came to Italy and then to Europe. There are many more books available in Prof Kertzers web site. Worth reading.
Which Indian will ever own up his culpability and the collective weight of our hoary history?
I don't know, but I do think Paedophillia in Catholic churches deserves more attention than this filmsy(even for a Dalit) connection between Brahmins and sexual libertarianism.
This is why they seldom rise above the position of sweepers(despite reservations in education).
@Prem Krishnan - You are mistaken. The photo shows only her head.
MM- killing in the name of Dharma and caste in the name of karma-powerfull words aptly said. I do agree. But arent there many women who use their feminist charm to further their interest ? The biological make up of men are different in that they are aroused by mere sight which is cleverly exploited. But to treat the body of the women as mere objects is , as u rightly said, to make love to mannequin.
Meena Kandaswamy! Why are you buriying your head in the shiit
One reason I admire 'Outlook' is that the maverick Mr Mehta somehow finds an off-beat, contrarian, or hugely unpopular voice in his mag. in the latest issue, Ms Kandasamy's the only piece which merited closer and appreciative reading. Great insight, Ms Kandasamy. But I bet most readers will find your writing offensive. Which Indian will ever own up his culpability and the collective weight of our hoary history?
“Our bourgeois, not content with seducing each other’s wives, not to speak of bragging about these and other conquests through social media, also take the greatest pleasure in satisfying their collective voyeurism”
Hmm. I guess our bourgeoisie need to introspect.
We should look up to the New Soviet Man. He would he be selfless, learned, healthy and enthusiastic in spreading the socialist Revolution. Adherence to Marxism-Leninism, and individual behavior consistent with that philosophy's prescriptions, were among the crucial traits expected of the New Soviet man. This required intellectualism and hard discipline. He was not driven by crude impulses of nature but by conscious self-mastery.
The Soviet Woman was someone who had and could never have existed before.A quarter of all trade-union women were designated as "norm-breaking." Vera Mukhina depicted a momentual sculpture, Worker and Kolkhoz Woman, dressed in work clothing, pressing forward with his hammer and her sickle crossed.
Among the major traits of a new Soviet man was selfless collectivism. The selfless new man was willing to sacrifice not only his life but his self-respect and his sensitivity. This trait was glorified from the first Soviet days by the Soviet poet Vladimir Mayakovsky:
Who needs a "1"? The voice of a "1" is thinner than a squeak. Who will hear it? Only the wife... A "1" is nonsense. A "1" is zero.
But wait, is this a new species, Homo Sovieticus? In 1934, a law banning homo-sexuality was introduced. In 1935, Pravda wrote that only a good family man can be a good Soviet citizen. In 1936, a trade union journal wrote that “abortion, which destroys life, is inadmissible. The Soviet woman has the same rights as the Soviet man, but her honourable duty is imposed by her nature as a mother. She is to bear life.” Abortion was banned.
In 1944, a decree established that only a legally recognized marriage entails the rights and duties for both husband and wife. Illegitimate children were relegated to an inferior status. Unmarried couples had to “regularize” their relationship. Divorce had to be approved by special tribunals.
Stalinists and Maoists have track records. Setting children up as spies and reporters against parents. In the first worker's paradise. Stalin took Russia and transformed it into a totalitarian government. He used the police to terrorize citizens into following the rules, by spying, using brutal force, or even murder. He controlled education by indoctrination, making a false image on the minds of children, so they will believe that it is all done for the welfare of the citizens, which would also get children spying and betraying their own parents.
Children were given awards for denouncing their parents, wives were forced to divorce their convicted husbands in the hope of protecting their children, and relatives of those convicted and killed were treated like pariahs.
And Pol Pot?
The regime recruited children to spy on adults. Doctors, professionals, even those with soft hands or spectacles that suggested they could read, were killed in droves. The executioners were often Pol Pot's child soldiers, indoctrinated to inform on their own parents. Everything that was dear to the people was abolished, including money, property, religion, traditional marriage, normal childhood, books, music, medicine - even laughter.
So, Ms. Kandasamy, ponder and compare it to bourgeosie. Were they as good as the proletariat in sexual and family morality?
@bowenpalle venuraja gopal rao.
Everything in life in not master and slave. The relationships between brothers, parents and son/daughters, grandparent and grandkids and teacher and student are based on Love, care and happiness of other being. Rama and Bharat story of brotherly love from Ramayana is revered by all. If you think these are also master-slave relationships, then I think we have basic difference about life and this discussion is meaningless..
Paul,
Actually the REAL reason that brother kills brother in India is not the BG, but because ( unlike in christian countries ), the judicial system is crap!
Thanks Rao, thats an awesome post !
Dont show your stupidity, understand it first, before commenting
Why dont you follow your own advice when mouthing about BG? If you can extrapolate something from it to some stupid systems, be ready to take a dose of same medicine. You dont need to get worked up over Mara. Everyone knows what Mara represents. Later traditions/literature of Buddhism do mention Mara as a cupid or a demon with physical form. My question was with respect to what he had in his mind while talking about women. And why women? Why not just lust ? That should answer it to you. You have conveniently forgotten the second question. Theres more to it.
Does an enlightened one tomtom about his "enlightenment" ? Does he need to renounce his family after "enlightenment" ? Is this not a kind of extremism which he was preaching against (while talking about middle path). When one says one has to conquer one's desires, is one not desiring (to conquer sins) ?
Meaningless writing! Brainless Meena Kandasamy! Above all, how this old man Vinod Mehta published such a trash!?
A slave culture is essentially about acquiring money and drool on material comforts. A slave culture thinks in terms of capital and profit. Sex is a sin. Money is everything. Women do not represent any spiritual power or spirit but essentially a sex commodity who can advertise, and hence they must be covered!!! And treated as sex commodities.
It does not believe in spritualism, kundalini, Meditation, Yoga, Spritual advancement, Renunciation, non-attachment and so on.
If a nation is more involved in this spiritual quest of human being’s transformation, it was because it looked upon material possessions and running after material comforts by confining themselves to body and treasury of money as a slave's behavior.
A slave culture is unbridled capitalism where women would be just another commodity and religion can be bought and sold with money!!!!
A slave would either suffer from jealousy when looks at a master or he would prostrate before the master and take his position as a slave but he will never try to rise himself to the level of the master, who acquired spiritual powers.
A slave would like to show his other side of cheek if slapped on one side. Jesus essentially represents a slave culture. There is nothing wrong in slave culture. Even slave cultures become economically powerful. For a slave , sex is a sin. For a slave the feeling of a sinner is natural. For a master sex is something spiritual. It is not a sinful act. If every day someone chants before Christ that he is a sinner (because he had sex with wife in the previous night ) , he would finally become a sinner.
It is utter foolish to think that Bhagavad-Gita encouraged killings in the name of Dharma. It only tells you not to show other side of your cheek when you are slapped.
Arjuna, after all, did not sit in fast unto death in the middle of a battle. Krishna told him to fight and did not tell him to show his back to be beaten until Duryodhana got tired! Our own slave culture which was brought by alien cultures and foreign religions seeped itself in to modern versions of Ramayana as well, if not Mahabharata.
In Ramanandasagar's versions, Lord Rama tells Ravana to release Sita from captivity and will go away taking Sita. But in original Valmiki version, written by a Scheduled Tribes fellow, Lord Rama fights and kills Ravana so much mercilessly that Ravan’s heart popped out from the back. A slave could have pleaded with Ravana!! But Lord Rama essentially represents a master culture.
@Sangeetha "Why stop at BGeetha ? Buddha thought women are employed by "MAra" to seduce men - as if they dont have anyother chores to attend to ! Even after the "enlightenment", he had doubts abt women's intellect, which was demolshed by Amrapali - a nagara vadhu."
Buddhism is one philosophy which has consistent message throught all of buddha saying/teaching.. Buddhism doesn't believe in Evil. MARA demon what buddha is talking about is not a actual demon but a metaphor for conditioned state of a being(formed over many life times).. Dont show your stupidity, understand it first, before commenting..
@Praveen:"It is also seen that Meena kandasamy, the Dravidan coward, does not seem to have the courage to pick holes in the Bible or the Quran either for hegemony or racism or ill treatment of women."
You don't understand. All the evils in the world are because of the "upper caste manuals" like Manu Smriti, Gita, Ramayana and Kamasutra. The Koran and Bible preach milk and honey, equality, love, brotherhood etc. That's why MK takes on the "upper caste manuals".
As for Vyasa being born to a fisherwoman, Krishna and Arjuna being Kshatriya (though Krishna was a yadava too), please note that MK has artistic liberties. Don't let some facts come in the way of a good castist rant.
@Bharat Paul:" No wonder in todays india we are seeing brothers killing brothers, sons abandoning their parents/grandparents at a fair/mela, over petty disputes of money. I recently came across a case in india, where a youth killed his grandparents because they wouldn't give him money.. Just as Geeta says.. "
I guess all property disputes, killing over money etc happen only in India.... and all this is because of the evil Yindooo book Bhagawat Geetha.... in the west grandparents, parents, children, brothers, sisters etc etc live in absolute peace and harmony and there are no disputes petty or otherwise over money, property etc...
Oh Brother Paul, how I wish I was in the west?
BTW, was Judas also influenced by the Geeta when he sold out JC for a few pieces of silver? Damn that evil Yindooo book.
@ Praveen - Nice comments. Not just Veda Vyasa, even Valmiki is not a brahmin and in today's era he would be a Scheduled Tribe! Its a pity that people like MK keep commenting and Outlook keeps publishing. A few pages less could make Outlook more worthier.
Why stop at BGeetha ? Buddha thought women are employed by "MAra" to seduce men - as if they dont have anyother chores to attend to ! Even after the "enlightenment", he had doubts abt women's intellect, which was demolshed by Amrapali - a nagara vadhu. theres more to it, But what does suggest of the egalitarianism ? So, are his teachings responsible for the continuing women's subjugation ? Over to "Scholars" ! JC said that he didnot come to bring peace, but to send sword, to turn daughter against mother, son against father, brother against brother. This says so much abt the west, Doesnt it ?? :D :D
Another sex-survey special issue carried expert advice on how to catch a man for a one-night stand. This inculcation and normalisation of the stereotype of a sexually liberated woman desperately yearning for the zipless you-know-what is another corporate creation that only manifests male supremacy and female subjugation
How did Meena connect the above two ? Why should anyone worry abt people who take theirown decisions, fully realizing the repercussions. Before that we'd like to know the def of a "sexually-liberated" woman . Please do enlighten us
I oppose the capitalist hetero-normative hedonism that flaunts openly exploitative relationships and causes the elite to believe that they are entitled to enjoyment
Fair enough. But how many of those "elites" are such brainless sheep !
37 D PAUL A few comments :
<<Sexual freedom is all about women empowerment.>>
This is feminist propaganda.
<<In modern society where sexual freedom is there, A man simply becomes a worker for the woman and babies.. She can always keep him on edge>>
Agreed. And yet, it remains a mystery why desperate, ill-informed young males still walk into the trap.
<<A women could still walk aways with her babies and man can't do much. A man will have to continue working for her and her babies and keep providing for them.. >>
This is thanks to anti-male laws organised by the MMS coterie. Otherwise, the children could CHOOSE.
<Bhagvad Geeta. It promotes not just killing .... No wonder in todays india we are seeing brothers killing brothers...>
In christian countries, dont kids kill their school mates? Is that because it is written in your Bible, or merely because of violent upbringing?
I agree with your take on Bhagvad Geeta. It promotes not just killing but killing of parents/grandparents/teachers/brothers if you get a little less property or money, in the name of dharma. No wonder in todays india we are seeing brothers killing brothers, sons abandoning their parents/grandparents at a fair/mela, over petty disputes of money. I recently came across a case in india, where a youth killed his grandparents because they wouldn't give him money.. Just as Geeta says..
Very interesting take on the other side of the sex surverys.
Sexual freedom is all about women empowerment. In modern society where sexual freedom is there, A man simply becomes a worker for the woman and babies.. She can always keep him on edge. A women could still walk aways with her babies and man can't do much. A man will have to continue working for her and her babies and keep providing for them.. Sexual freedom and their natural rights over babies gives great deal of power back to women.
How and when did the sacred ancient Hindu Book, Bhagawat Gita become a Brahminical hegemonic text? The Dravidan ignoramus with a deep seated inferiority complex, Meena Kandasamy, must have copy pasted from some Missionary tract. Bhagawat Gita which is part of the great Indian Epic Mahabharat was written by Maharishi Veda Vyasa who would have been called a Scheduled Caste if he were alive today. The message in the Bhagawat Gita was preached by Sri Krishna, a Yadava, Backward Caste, to Arjuna, a Kshatriya. So where is the question of Brahminical dominance coming in the picture? Meena Kandasamy's ignorance of Bhagawat Gita is evident from her ranting and raving about rationalises killing in the name of dharma and caste in the name of karma. Let this foolish woman know that the word caste is not used in the Bhagawat Gita. Caste is a later day Portuguese construct. Armies since the ancient times to this day have only one punishment for cowardice and desertion in battlefield-summary trial and death. Arjuna would have met the same fate if sri Krishna had not intervened and persuaded Arjuna that a soldier's duty or dharma on a battlefield is to fight. It is also seen that Meena kandasamy, the Dravidan coward, does not seem to have the courage to pick holes in the Bible or the Quran either for hegemony or racism or ill treatment of women.
Sangeetha,
Feminism has taken an anti-male colour recently. And this blurred line is not obvious to many of the commentators / readers who have been so indoctrinated with feminism through all their lives.
Its good to see you recognise that this lady cannot be defended even by the ardent anti-male of her species, since ( as pointed out by another commentator ), this one is the casteist CUM anti-male variety ( gender-casteism along with regular casteism ).
@@Sangeetha
Talking abt magazine's preferences in running stories- would Meena prefer to marry a man from the proletariat class ?? :)
Good question!!! I wanted to ask this same question.
While these "surveys" themselves are a load of dung, we have this fate of having to read commentaries on them !
Sweat and squalor don’t lend themselves to sensuality
They arent sitting idle like us and thinking of sensuality ! They are more cultured and conservative than us "modern" apes and know the difference b/n their bedrooms and public places ! Talking abt magazine's preferences in running stories- would Meena prefer to marry a man from the proletariat class ?? :)
With all these feminist extremism, genuine issues of females will surely hit the wall ! Over to our MU to take on Ms.Meena's stupidity !
26 D
Ramki,
Once a bigot, always a bigot. 'Budding' feminazi, feminist and anti-male, are only terms, and only define a matter of degree ( and perspective ). With more 'women' writers turning out to be 'anti-male' too, it is only a matter of time now, before the male esteem is obliterated completely. Already there was a commentator asking why males were needed since women could clone themselves!
WAKE UP, MALES! SPEAK UP!
I think it's far safer to make love to Mannequins than without protection, to STD ridden prostitutes who charge a mere 15 Rupees for a session, don't you think so?
the hateful yearnings of people like Narendra for a much much larger ethnic cleaning still seems to persist.
I was all for providing incentives for immigration, but it looks like self determination for the evil Brahmins/Kshatriyas will do just fine.
@Ramki,
Where are those few who supported Kapil Sibal when he declared that defammatory internet content that abuses and hurts feeling of people of any religious community should be censored?
Obviously such hurt and defammation does not count if the victims are Hindus.
It's cultural Marxism,mate.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, a British court let Muslims free after they attacked a Christian girl because alchohol was alien to Islam.
Here is a piece of good news for you. There are still wonderful nations in the world which dont have any Hindoos or capitalists. Like North Korea or Afghanistan/Pakistan.Why dont you migrate to these places , live for a couple of years and then write another piece such as above?
She already IS in a capitalist country, the United Kingdom, LOL.
The writer is not just an author. She is a FEMINAZI in budding. And her article is perfect example of gender hate mongering.
Gender and CASTE, remember that.
Let us see.... so Ms MK should get Booker Prize by 2020, be then get doctorate, then hopefully become a leading politician by 2040 and by then must be nominated for Nobel Prize for peace, as wel..
I hope she becomes the PM of an all Dalit state independent of India, I just don't want to put up with more of this crap.
The author is doing everything (probably) except spitting on herself. She is very cynical and her understanding of Kamasutra , for example , tells us that either her understanding and reading of this great classic was under a dose of heroin or an injection of morphine or she must be deliberately throwing mud only to pass off as "modern woman" !!! Kamasutra is not about upper caste people or their sex or it is for caste Brahmins!! It is not about upper class sex!! The description about woman with ’pug nose' was there, as author points out but in a different context. This chapter in Kamasutra was about types of women and success of a marriage. Kamasutra is much advanced than what was practiced in Middle Ages and to a great extent even to the present day. Consider the following just for example: 1) For a marriage match, a bridegroom was advised to go himself to see the girl in person, and decide. Compared to that in middle ages and even up to 1960's , relatives or parents of bridegroom used to go and select the girl and at this stage, bridegroom himself "must" be conspicuously absent in all those so called upper caste marriages. Children of present generation may not understand this, but for my father or grandfathers generation it was mindboggling. 2) Kamasutra advises the bridegroom about the types of women and says for example a) If a woman was weeping by the time groom reaches her place, then he should avoid such a marriage. Vatsayana did not say it is for upper castes or Brahmins. In the same manner groom should avoid someone who was naked by the time he reaches her house. If a girl does not know propriety of such an important occasion, he should avoid marrying such a woman. In that same chapter he speaks about girls with no breasts or extremely small breasts or woman with upturned noses, woman with too much hair. The book was written ( certainly not without faults according to me) in 3rd century or in a much earlier period and the issue was about fertility, capacity of a woman to produce children, cantankerous woman, and woman obsessed with sexual desires, and selfish woman. But not about upper caste or lower caste. 4) Why a man likes his woman (in the context of a wife)? Vatsyana did not write about woman with big breasts ( a wife with huge breasts for example ) or curvaceous woman or fair complexioned woman or "slim" size zero woman because Vatsyana says men do not care or would not become "hen pecked " by these types of woman !!(He makes it very clear). Kamasutra says that if a woman (in the context of wife) keeps herself extremely clean, her hair and clothes spick and span and if she speaks a foreign language fluently, her man likes her very much. And additionally if she knows how to reply to an elderly person's humorous sexual remarks and if she knows how to respect elderly guests who arrive for a visit , her husband likes her and become more interested in having sex with her, according to Kamasutra. Kamasutra also speaks about woman selling vegetables, maid servants and manual labour class and their sexual pleasures and also how to do like them and their various techniques to adopt. From these writings we understand that there was no starvation, and food was plenty even for the working classes in those days. Kamasutra was not about sexual poses alone. Sex poses etc., is just one chapter of this great book. Kamasutra should be read by every housewife, if they wanted vigorous, happy married life. For example, it explains how a woman should take care of the house and herself in the absence of her husband. About Bhagavad-Gita, author’s comments are extremely foolish. Probably she never Bhagvad-Gita. The essence of Gita (most of Gita slokas can be found in Upanishads) is the Karma Yoga because no other religion except Buddhism and Jainism answers these questions. For example why a person is handsome, rich, highly intelligent while another one, not only illiterate but also very ugly to look at and was also handicapped as well as very poor? Swami Vivekananda asks (in Chicago lecture) if God is benevolent, kind and merciful why someone gets everything and also fortunate while another gets nothing and also very unlucky. Gita answers these questions by Karma, re-birth, advaitha and dvaitha, and other Yogas like Bhakti and Ganana Yogas. Gita's Karma yoga does not inspire cloth stores of multinationals as author says. It is her poor understanding of re-birth. A soul takes re-birth, once the body is gone (death) just like we throw away old clothes and wear new one, soul rejects and accepts a new body. How Karma Yoga of Bhagavad-Gita can increase consumerism and cloth stores!!! How Kamasutra can inspire only the rich, bolsters their male ego and throws away poor people??? Kamasutra is not about class struggle or about labour welfare! It is about grooming young girl into an adult woman, her marriage, her sex, her first night (Kamasutra advises not to have sex in first night), her body massage, and her role as a house wife, man's suspicions, his likes and dislikes, use of perfume, clothes, language, cleanliness, womanizing, importance of sexual pleasures and sex poses. She is very vague and read too much between the lines of Bhagavad-Gita or Kamasutra or it may be that she has a very superficial knowledge.
Irreverent >> This disaster piece was waiting to happen with jokers like Meena Kandasamy
Sorry friend, I have to disagree on this. Trying to call a rabble rouser/hatemonger like MK as just a joker is extremely in bad taste. It is very sad to see MK being clubbed along the likes of genuine professional jokers such as Daredevil Digvijay Singh, Zero Loss Kapil Sibal and all.
I always wondered who will be the Arundathi Roy of Next generation and now I think we have an answer - Meena Kandaswamy.
But unlike AR, MK has political ambitions (maybe because there was another person MK who has made a great political career in TN on themes like social justice and "Hinduism is root cause of all problems in this planet").
MB >> And YET, the anti-male author finds fault with the media for finding women 'too' sexy!
Anwaar >> While we all deplore the ethnic cleaning of Kashmiri Pandits,
Sorry to say , but you are wrong. Most Muslim Leaders and Muslim intellectuals have been silent on the subject of kashmiri pandits. But in private, there are quite some extreme elements in the community who actually justified the same. There are a few rabble rousers who actually beleive that Indian will be a better place if same is repeated across India. (If you dont believe this, read the likes of Nasar Ahmed on this board who attributes all evils to a particular caste within Hinduism). And sadly , the so called tolerant and mature islamic intellectual elites in india dont care to condemn such a vocal minority in their community who only bring bad name to the entire community.
Meena >> In my opinion, global corporates resemble the merciless caste structure enshrined in Hinduism, which is why it is a scary option in India today.
Meena Kandasamy >> The Bhagavad Gita, a Brahminic hegemonic text that rationalises killing in the name of dharma and caste in the name of karma,
Yeah so there was no muder, killing and war before Bhagwat Gita? Right,BTW outside India/South Asia , outside Indian diaspora, 99.9% of people dont even know what Bhagwat Gita is. So , the world outside evil Hindoo South Asia should be a wonderful heaven of peace right. But what about countless wars and killings that happened in Europe, New world, West Asia and East Asia? Maybe all warmongers in world are closet Hindus !!
This is a good read if one does not take the author (or poet) seriously. Infact its funny too.
I never thought that it was the BHagavadgita that is responsible for all women wanting to be "Fair and Lovely" as Aishwarya Rai and "Fair and Handsome" like Shah Rukh Khan.
I always thought men were suckers (no pun intended) when it came to gazing at breasts. That this habit is deeply rooted in the Hindu Caste system is a revelation. I guess all those plastic surgeons in the west owe the Hindu Caste system quite a lot of their fortunes and prosperity.
I never looked at Kamasutra and Bhagavadgita as marketing / sales manuals. Hmm... now there's someting Arindam Chaudhari can tap into as a pony-tailed self-proclaimed marketing guru.
"The Bhagavad Gita, a Brahminic hegemonic text that rationalises killing in the name of dharma and caste in the name of karma, "
Amazing. The more amazing that this ignorant finds space in outlook to spit out her garbage. While NASA scientists are trying to decode Gita and use it as reference for their big bang project in cern, we are fed with this pathetic trash.
"That word "joker" again! Sheesh!"
Are you referring your comments about Nanavati commission ?
>> Would outlook dare publish and would Meena Kandasamy dare write such rubbish about the sacred texts of other religions?
No. Vinod Mehta will never have the guts to write something like this against other religions, particularly Islam.
It is 'in born' in females ( like the anti-male author above ), to whine about anything. By creating such myths, and stereotypes through such criticism, they 'naturally' become 'victims' and the 'hurt gender'.
And these femiinists know that they have sympathetic ears - by the very fact that they are female - as seen amply in Outlooks space given to specimens like her.
Take advertising for eg. - MCPs have been saying this all the while - modern advertisements make men look stupid, sexually perverted and violent, and the women intelligent, innocent and ( as seen in the samples quoted ) sensous and sexy. And YET, the anti-male author finds fault with the media for finding women 'too' sexy!
Narendra,
>> a pity ALL Muslims in India never migrated to that place.
While we all deplore the ethnic cleaning of Kashmiri Pandits, the hateful yearnings of people like Narendra for a much much larger ethnic cleaning still seems to persist.
Irreverent,
>> with jokers like Meena Kandasamy.
That word "joker" again! Sheesh!
This disaster piece was waiting to happen with jokers like Meena Kandasamy being asked to write on on sex and sensuality.
One can understand Meena feeling offended by the Kamasutra. Probably, she finds herself being described in the phrase "...girls who have depressed noses or upturned nostrils, male body structures, crooked thighs, projecting foreheads....". Sorry lady, the Kamasutra was written long before you were born. None of us - including you - can control or redesign our lousy looks. The least you could have done was to have a more jovial mugshot on your Outlook profile (www.outlookindia.com/peoplehome3.aspx). We upper-caste scumbags have a bigoted sense of aesthetics. But, we are also prone to being fooled once in a while, by idiots with good make-ups. Ask Arundhati or Mallika Sherawat/ Sarabhai for tips.
Dalits will sieze their rightful place and will come to dominate the Indian system in due course, partly because of their own enterprise and partly because of the enlightened upper caste congress leaders of 1947 who realised that the caste system was wrong and who brought in affirmative action to correct past injustices. The caste system will also die a natural death in the face of the market forces unleashed post 1990. The free market is blind to caste at least in the long term as overlooking talented dalits would be ruinous for organisations in a compettive environment. We already have a dalit ruling the most populous state of the country. Over the next many decades we will see dalits passing out of the recs and iits going on to become entrepreneurs and scientists. And for sure we will have literary giants emerge from among the dalits who will write great stuff and elegantly express their pain and suffering in poems and stories, without having to resort to the pamphleteering and lazy reductionist techniques practiced by Meena Kandasamy
"If one realises that we belong to a caste society that once demanded that untouchable women bare their breasts and not wear blouses, we’ll move closer to understanding the male gaze that predominates advertising today." Kandasamy
Of course the "male gaze predominates advertising" in the West, Japan, China and every culture in the world outside India even though they never had a caste system or bad Brahmins stripping Sudra women.
Kandasamy's argument is a "post hoc ergo procter hoc" logical fallacy (literally, "after this, therefore because of this"), a classical example of which is the statement "The rooster crowed and then sun rose, therefore the sun rises because the rooster crows." Similarly for Kandasamy, "India had a vicious caste system in the past, and today the male gaze predominates advertising, so the caste system is responsible for today's male gaze."
In a sad way, Kandasamy's opinions are a mirror image of the caste bigotry that she correctly opposes. Just as upper-caste people were not able to look at anything that involved Sudras without seeing it through the lens of caste, Kandasamy cannot look at anything that involves "upper" castes without the lens of caste.
It is unfortunate that Outlook keeps providing a forum for this kind of illogical and regressive thinking.
The references made by the writer to the Bhagwad Geeta are quite unnecessary and despicable. The Geeta is a sacred text for millions of Hindus and not just Brahmins (I am not a Brahmin). Would outlook dare publish and would Meena Kandasamy dare write such rubbish about the sacred texts of other religions?
@ MU: No it doesn't. I still think that redundancy of the womb is light years away. Anyway, the male's role has always been marginal in he process. Why should I worry? It is not going to happen in my lifetime.
8 D, Narayanan
On the contrary - the gametes - BOTH male and female are now reduntant. The media may not want to tell you, but it is only a matter of time before the womb becomes reduntant for procreation too!
Does nt That thought worry you?
@MU
It was just a humourous aside. If you take artificial insemination to its logical conclusion, males will become redundant as male gametes can be cloned. Doesn't that thought worry you?
6 D
Narayan, I wonder what you want me to think of whatever you think!
Anyway, only fools ( besides anti-male activists ) believe in the conveniently 'simplistic theory' that women were weak historically, and somehow males were superior. The fact is men are DIFFERENT from women. Women always knew how to get the men like yourself, to work for them, while they enjoyed its benefits :)
As for in-vitro fertilisation, science is growing and I wonder how the esteem of males are supposed to be affected negatively by it?
In spite of all our self-deceptions we may not have advanced any further in our sexual behavior than the preening and grooming of apes...Post no 2
At the primal level, things can never change. Men will remain men even a million years down the line. However, in the technological age, brain supercedes brawn and women are no longer the weaker sex. The woman of today is far more assertive about her sexual rights than her counterpart just a couple of generations before her. The fact that Meena Kandaswamy can write in this manner is a testament to this fact.
At the biological level, the naked apes have progressed to the in-vitro fertilisation stage, where reproduction does not involve actual sexual intercourse. There is a distinct possibility that in the future, propagation of the human species might take place by cloning and not by mating.
I wonder how Male Unblocked will react to this doomsday scenario.
The Bhagavad Gita, a Brahminic hegemonic..... Krishna according to Mahabharata was Kshtatriys advising another Kshatriya Arjun. . MK all the Brahmanic texts have been either the Vedas or Upanishads not Bhagvad Gita. Please learn fundas well before dishing out false writing.
What would MK call GWBush , Tony Blair when they illegally invaded Iraq. WASP Kshatriya Hegemony
Jinnah did us a huge favor by finding Pakistan(a pity ALL Muslims in India never migrated to that place), high time we free ourselves from this cultural Marxist shithole as well, a new nation where people won't be denigrated for feeding their children, instead of having their children work in restaurants to feed their drinking habits.
[Sex here is not a leisure activity indicative of libido, but one of the ways in which men and women come to terms with their anger with the world, one of the ways in which they find the love to heal themselves.]
That is just a LITTLE bit reductionist and condescending, o author. Just a little.
Meena Kandasamy has a point. Sexual libertarianism may be just a sublimation of baser instincts of voyeurism and exhibitionism. In spite of all our self-deceptions we may not have advanced any further in our sexual behavior than the preening and grooming of apes.
1.Our burgeois UPPER CASTE?
Umm, don't you people have reserved seats for yourselves in Govt jobs?
I mean, you'd have to be some really low IQ, primates for not being a part of this middle class despite all this affirmative action, which you ARE, a lot of people blame India's history for the inequality of wealth, I don't, I know why the Sindhi immigrants from Pakistan are so much better off economically better of than 'other' communities.
2.The woman who craves is the woman who is condemned. In the words of the Manusmriti, “Women do not care for beauty, nor is their attention fixed on age; thinking that it is enough if he is a man, they give themselves.”
The Bhagavad Gita, a Brahminic hegemonic text that rationalises killing in the name of dharma and caste in the name of karma, speaks of how the soul discards worn-out bodies and takes on new ones just as old clothes are abandoned in favour of fresh ones.
Hmm,one wonders what hell would break loose if one were to talk about Sexism in the Koran and the Bible for that matter, where women are supposed to be punished for Eve's disobedience.
3.One cannot forget that there are casteist/feudal remnants among the urban elite. It may be the reason why sexual conquests are seen as a matter of pride and position.
And you people don't, I guess that should explain your double digit fertility rates, LOL, I mean how noble it is of the 'underpriveleged'(lol) castes that they never have extra marital sex with sex workers in brothels,LOL.
Meena, if you really think us upper caste men are the root cause of all the problems plaguing India, then please, by all means, carve out a piece of land for your own community, and stay out of our affairs and we'll stay out of yours.
High time for self determination for every community in India, for the productive ones, and the useless ones as well.
