Ancient Wisdom

I absolutely loved the story Science of the Ages (Aug 29). Hats off to the people of Garhwal and the bba for trying to preserve time-honoured agricultural practices, resisting the new central farming plans.

Kudos to 'Outlook' for raising such an important issue. In India the agriculture practices developed and adopted during the last fifty years are responsible for the loss of genetic diversity. As per FAO report, due to industrial focus on output of a few major crops,75% of crop diversity was lost between 1900 and 2000 and upto 22% of the wild relatives of peanut, potato and beans will disappear by 2055 at global level. Most of the Indian 'genetic diversity hot spots' are in the hill ecosystem and Uttrakhand is one of them. The efforts made by Beej Bachao Andolan,Vijay Jardhari and Navdanya at the field level are really commendable. The Government should tailor the agriculture schemes like RKVY as per local needs and people demands. The conservation of crop biodiversity must be made mandatory because of the fact because it is a strategic resource for sustainable development and eradication of hunger and provide insurance against environmental calamities.

What a beautiful story, and hats off to the people of Garhwal and the BBA for trying to maintain time-honoured agricultural practices. And could Outlook create space to feature stories such as these on a regular basis?
